Under Gravel Filters

I have a small hex tank that was bought years ago. routing through the cupboard and found the undergravel filter it came with. I never used it and have no instructions for it.

Its a hex shape piece of white plastic with holes, a tube connecting with a 6mm air pipe and stone inside...


is there meant to be any sponge media with this?
would this suffice as filtration in a small tank?


Basically... i just want to know how they work lol
