Honestly, I would just get rid of the UGF and get a power filter of some sort instead.
 
lol i know you replace it but do you have to dig up the entire tank's gravel to get to the airstone? i dont have a ugf but i was thinking of buying a 30 gallon for some marbled hatchets and putting a ugf and a power filter in it

Yes. You pull the tubing up through the riser tube, the airstone is attached to the end of the tubing. Pull the old one off and put the new one on. They need to be changed every month or two or when you notice your air flow is reduced from them being clogged. I changed one last night and it took me less than two minutes.
