I have been doing a little research on this issue. And I have found some differences on tank size. Tank sizes from 120 to 240 US gal. I am thinking that this range is not quite to par.

I did a little bit of guess work.

Going on the fact that a male umbee gets around 24". I am guessing he needs about 30" to turn. I will give him 30" of head room, just because. I would think he would at least need 3 times his body length in horizontal movement. That comes to 72".

Soooo...Doing the maths.

(30"x30"x72")/231"= Roughly 280 US gal

Any comments will be welcomed. :look:

Its more than enough room for a Caquetaia Umbriferus or a Nandopsis Umbriferus witch ever you want is your choice and i also think the tank size is really good for it. May i ask just where in the world did you find one of these because there not in LFS's?

I agree with you on the lfs not having them. I am pretty sure that I can up my chances by going through the TCA (Texas Cichlid Association) or get pointed in the right direction. Any how, I am in no hurry. I am a tank first then fish kind of guy. And we don't have the room right now to house such a massive tank.

Thanx for the input

um, these would both be the same fish. :) the umbie used to be classified as Nandopsis but was moved some years ago to the genus Caquetaia.

as for the tank size, it sounds great for an umbee. in fact I think you could lower the height to 24" and be completely fine. not saying the umbee won't appreciate the extra room because it will. they are open water swimmers so the extra swimming space would be appreciated. :)
