while i don't consider it much problem (just a bit of scraping every week and turning gravel, no biggie) and my Platties certainly enjoy the algae, i don't think it's supposed to grow on...

snails.

you heard me. snails. my snails are covered in algae. short-stalked slime algae has grown on all my older, adult snails. i don't think it should do that.
 
maybe its because they stay in the one postion for a long time ? And there shell is the right place for algae to grow on!
 
My snails get algae on their shells too. It's weird I got them to get rid of the algae and they've turned into an algae transport system. Anyway I do clean them off every now and again using a new soft bristle tooth brush. It does the job.
