I am chnaging my substrate to sand in the next few days and i read in one of my books that you can use an UGF as a return from your external filter so that the substrate has a current going through it. Can this be done and would it work with sand? I am wondering whether this would stop waste food settling causing problems with it rotting. I am thinking it would be similar to the uder gravel jets i saw a thread on here about last week.

Can't use under gravel filters with sand, you will need an internal filter

I have 2 external filters already so thats fine it was just an idea to try and keep the sand moving

Undergravel filters are garbage anyways, they suck all the dirt from the gravel, but in order to remove that dirt you need to remove the gravel which will just stir up the dirt again. Aswell they suck the benifical bacterias into a spot where they can't benift the fish.

RUGF/UGF require a medium size gravel to work properly. Bigger gravel can work but not as efficiently and sand will just clog it fast.

If you need your sand stirred consider getting Malaysian trumpet Snails.

I would imagine that forcing the current through sand will cause a lot of disturbance and just can't see it working as well as creating an unholy mess in the tank (sandy cloudy water).

It will most likely flow through a few localized spots in the sand, causing the sand to migrate away from those areas. You'll likely get sand in the other holes in the grating.
