I am planning on setting up a small shrimp aquarium (around 15-25 litres) but was thinking about using moss as a substrate (probably java moss as I already have a lot of it already) but I'm not sure of the advantages and disadvantages of all the different types of moss? I was also thinking about setting up a backdrop of moss in my current tank but wasn't sure which would be the best type to use for this?
I would be grateful for any advice, experience and info on different types of moss as I can't seem to find anything about them online?

The neocaradina seem to love java moss. I have never seen them even offered at auction without a sample of the moss in their fish bag. It is their security blanket.

I am definitely using this in my shrimp tank but don't know if to use it as the backdrop for my current setup or try a different type of moss. I don't know what difference there is though and what advantages there are between them all? :S

I'm no expert in mosses, but, IME, Java moss is quite 'messy' and tends to form more loose clumps. I have Christmas and weeping moss as well and they're more 'frondy', like a miniature fern, and tend to form denser patches. They'd both make good moss walls, or flame moss would make a lovely backdrop to a tank, if you can source some.

I've found they need fairly good light, or they go very leggy and the strands float off, but apart from that they're very easy to grow; shrimps love all kinds, I think.

Shrimp love Moss, I have collected 8 different types of moss in my tank (please dont ask me to name them all! lol) and they are all growing well.

They are covered in shrimp all the time and I couldnt say that the shrimp prefer 1 type of moss over the other. Moss is a must for any tank with shrimp in IMO.

I have java moss in my shrimp tank & they spend most of their time on it, cleaning & eating.
It can look a bit unruly, I'm looking to get some neater kind if I can
