Two Species of Congo Tetras in One Tank Doing Great.

This summer I put my Gold Blue Eyed Congo Tetras (Phenacogrammus aurantiacus) in the 75g tank with my regular Congo Tetras (Phenacogrammus interruptus) and all is going very well. They get along, are very active, and are a blast to watch. I also tweaked my LED light a bit to bring out more of the ventral blues of the Gold Congos and the rainbow coloring of the regular Congos (still my favorites) while keeping the light intensity on the low side.

The natural habitats are different. P auriantacus (I'm jealous) come from blackwater tributary creeks feeding the Congo. I think that's why they arrived in the hobby so recently. If you can ever get Alestopetersius caudalis, the yellow Congo, it's an under rated beauty now being captive bred. There's also a reddish one , I believe Alestopetersius brichardi that is a good one.

African tetras are overlooked because a lot are larger. I have Congos, greeni, breseghemi and Alestopetersius smykalai here. The later are very young and supposedly make lovely adults. I'll find out in time. They came with one mixer/accidental side catch that behaves differently but that I can't identify yet.

You are correct…..the yellow and red Congos you mentioned would be awesome to have. I hope to someday. Atm, however, I consider myself lucky to have the P. aurantiacus (which were very costly and were hard for me to find). I may be getting a lead on some A. birchardi…..
The one problem, though, is I am currently “maxed out” tank wise and may have to find a way to add a tank or two. Not very likely tho

Cherry Red Congo Tetra (Alestopetersius brichardi red / blue)

This amazing tetra has deep red fins and iridescent purple blue body. This is one of the most beautiful tetras from Congo. Rare and beautiful!!! (Due to the sensitive nature of these fish... there is no live arrival guarantee on this fish)

I also got golds there, they only lasted 2 years at my house, but that tank is more stable now… I’d definitely buy them again
