Two Random Deaths

so.... two or three days ago I bought four females.

two of my females died last night. they have no fins or tails. my water stats are 0 for ammonia n nitrite, 20 for nitrate and ph 7.8.

none of them looked ill before they died..

one of the ones that died, when I bought them had no horizontal stripes, then it gained them. then i found two of them dead this am.


why could they have died? I did everything right, introduced them to the tank slowly, the stats were all fine?


could they have just fought? its possible they lost the tails and fins after death.. but I dont know.

should I have had more than four?

what do I do? do I buy four more so I have 6? do I take the two I have back?

help?!

edit 2 add. theyre in a 10g tank, only them in it. one fairly large plastic plant.

For them to have died so quick, and if as you say your stats are stable, it could have been -

They were already carrying an infection when you bought them (check the lfs to see if they had a problem)

You have a rougue male PK amongst them.


Having 4 females should be ok, but you need to get loads of plants, caves or other hiding places in there.

Have you got any pics of the remaining ones?

i just phoned the lfs they said the females theyve got in don't seem to like it there.


what on earth does that mean??

theyre going to gimme store credit i think, but im not buying more females from them. know where else I can get them anyone?

modaz and devoncharm on here both sometimes have females. modaz has had some lovely ones on ebay recently and i'm sure will have more there soon, but its always worth pm'ing them. netty and bronzecat have some 3 month copper fry, who are beginning to be sexable, could be worth trying them too.

just been back to lfs... ALL of their females died. they had over fifty easily!!! they said it was a bad batch and gave me two gold rams instead.

I think I will give it a long while before I try my hand at breeding.

im not having much luck with fish *sigh*

Sorry you've had such bad luck with your girls At least it's not something you've done and there was probably not alot you could of done to save them, but don't let it put you off keeping them......these things happen to us all at times

That is bad luck. Sometimes they get bad batches in, one shop I go to doesn't get girls in any more, because they cant seem to keep them alive. Touch wood my girls are all Ok but they are all split up...
