I have two Glass Cats that hide and I don't know what to do!!! They hang out up by the filter swimming in place & only one eats.

Glass cats are very timid and should only be houses in huge shoals. They need lots of cover from floating plants and such for optimum activity, and even then they're not active much.

I heard glass cats are not hardy fish at all which really stinks. :/

2 isn't enough, that's why they're hiding. They would be much happier in a group of 6+ if you have the room. They also don't like boisterous fish.

Well the only problem about putting 6+ in the tank I don't really have the room for any more fish. :(

They seem to come out during thier night time.

So the best thing to do would be to rehome them.

The reason they come out at night is because they will safer without the lights on.

I guess your right I have to bring them back to the store. :-( But thanks for the info!

I'm afraid I agree with minnnt (as usual, lol!). Glass cats do need to be in a largish shoal to feel safe enough to behave naturally, and must be kept only with other, very peaceful fish.

I keep mine in a very overgrown, mature four foot tank with false neons, marbled hatchets and some BNs, and that's the kind of set up they do well in. I've been buying them three at a time, and it's only now I have the dozen that I feel they're 'happy'.

In smaller, barer tanks with not enough company or with boisterous fish, like your mollies, they just don't thrive; often being too shy to come out and feed, as you're finding.

I want to thank all of you for convincing my son to return these fish. I knew right away that they wouldn't be happy because they need to be in groups of 6-8 at very least & they prefer a much larger tank. My father is the one that purchased them for my son because he had them when he was a kid.

Amazing how my son will listen to a few internet posters before he'll listen to his own father! He's only 10 years old so he thinks "If it looks good, let's add it"

I understand that far too well. I fear that it will only get worse before it gets better for you. :(

Oh, we all have to start somewhere! Glass cats are very often an impulse purchase, as they do look so 'cool'!
