Two Deaths

I would risk doing another water change and you can even triple dose declorinator.
I no its late but it shouldn't take long.

Has your ph changed like tigerissey asked.

Just out of interest, have you checked your pH as a sudden change in pH can cause breathing at the surface.

I was just about to do that :) I noticed a few of the symptoms in the link Wilder posted mentioned pH shock.... it's usually 7.5ish.... will check now.

Ok its not ph then.
I would do a water change and triple dose the declorinator. If fish die tonight it going to make thing worse with there bodies decomposing.

Sods law it had to happen tonight.... gotta be up in the city first thing doing a demo to a potential new client! lol

Will do another big water change, loads of Aqua Safe, then they'll have to be ok with that for the night :/
Although I hardly see him normally, the nuggets one of my favourites, would hate to lose him!

Thankyou lots for your help Wilder & TigerIssey :)
I'm going to do the water change now then collapse, thankyou again for your help, I'll let you know how it goes when I get to a computer next!

I would agree with wilder, go for about 25% waterchange and add the treble dose, it will not harm the fish. It could be other metals anything that has set this off. You will not see all toxin symptoms either as each toxin has specific symptoms, the symptom list will be a list of symptoms that are possible with toxin poisoning, they fish will not show all of them.

Ensure you add the carbon back to filter aswell, make sure you get everything out.

If it is a med overdose, a further water change will also dilute the med.

Good Luck.
Good Luck with the demo. And plenty of coffee to keep you awake.

Thanks :)

One 80l water change later, and it's in the hands of the gods for tonight.
I suspect there'll be casualties as many of the danios are looking bad. I've spotted one of them occasionally vertical, breathing at the surface.
Some of them also look bloated (some were tubbier than others, I guess being females, but this looks wrong), and possibly their gills are looking pink.

Have to leave it till morning now *fingers crossed*

UPDATE: One danio was dead this morning, I didn't have time to do anything other than fish him out. :(

Got back from meeting to find another danio on it's last gasps (really with I had some clove oil to put it out of it's misery :( )
Just done another big water change (approx 100l - triple dose with Aqua Safe) and *fingers & toes crossed* it seems to have made a difference.
The rainbows and some of the danios are moving around the tank a bit more, still very subdued though.
The SAE's are still hanging around the bottom instead of busily mowing the algae off the wood.
The golden nugget initially retreated to somewhere darker, has now gone back to top of tank.

How many gallons is the tank. How many water changes now.
The damage could of been done now so even water changes don't seem to help.

The fish organs might have packed in.

R.I.P.

How many gallons is the tank. How many water changes now.

It's a 300 litre tank (80 US gallons, 65 Imperial gallons)

Last night there was a 60l, followed by 80l water change
Today at lunchtime there was a 100l water change

Just got back from the office to find my favourite red rainbowfish and the smallest of the blue rainbows dead. :(

About half of the danios are at the surface, and the plecs still up there too.
The rest of the rainbowfish and danios are in the middle of the tank, and are getting a bit of their colour and character back, although still look to be breathing heavily.

My math isn't brilliant, but if it started at 100% bad water, I work it out to now be 40%

60 / 300 = 20%
80% bad water
20% good

80 / 300 = 25% (ish)
60% bad water
40% good

100 / 300 = 33%
40% bad water
60% good

I was thinking of doing another big water change, another 100l would reduce the bad water to around 27%

After that the percentage reduction becomes negligible, even for large water changes.

I'm sure I'll lose another 1 or 2 danios (one going vertical now) :(
Of all things the clown loaches seem unaffected!

The gold nugget is very unhappy, dashing round the top of the tank now, trying to find a better place to breathe. :-(

I agree, it's horrible to see them like this.

Following this water change, if there's no improvement.... I don't know..... if they're suffering then I'll have to get hold of some clove oil. :(

5 danios are hanging out at the surface still, as is the golden nugget.
The rainbow fish have much of their usual character back, but are still breathing heavily

Sorry if you have already mentioned this but do you have extra aeration running, it can definately help when they are hanging at the surface despite your dissolved oxygen reading.

I would do another water change aswell, dilute as much as possible.

Yep, I've an air pump with a couple of stones.
I've also raised the spray bar so it jets into the surface. As well as stirring up the surface to give greater area, this creates much finer bubbles and I can see them being carried right across the tank in the current.

I did a 100l water change an hour or so ago.
Unfortunately I'll have to wait till tomorrow to do any further water changes as I've pretty much used up the Tap Safe (was a new bottle yesterday!) :/

How are the fish do they look any better after the water change.

I would throw the bottle of pimafix away as it might be something wrong with it.
