Hi i have just planted 10 twisted vallis plants into my aquaruim, some of the leaves seemed a little yellow when they arrived, Im dosing with co2 liquid made by columbo, have columbo plant fert in every two weeks, 2 x25w bulbs full spectrum and super glo.

I cant seem to buy easy carbo or flourish excel in my town.

Whats the best way to grow them successfully

Personally, depends on tank size plus lighting specs + duration.

Tank size?
T5, T8, Halogen, LEDS - what are you using?
Photoperiod is how long in your tank?

Also, with CO2 i would dose daily the recomended for your tank volume. Every two weeks is pointless as this will cause fluctuations which will benefit algae only. Dosing this far apart aswell you may aswell not dose at all.

Ferts dose every 3rd day, or 3 times weekly, and dose AFTER water changes not before.

Tank is 90lites, they are the larger one not really thin types the tubes i mean. I think they are halogen or flourcent def not LED. The co2 im dosing daily but the fert recommends maximum of once per 2 weeks should i increase this.

Thanks i have one filter 200lph and 1 400lph in there planning on upgrading to a fluval 3+ soon though.

On the basis you say there thicker rather than thinner i would hazard a guess and say your running x2 25W T8's. Halogen is a big price hike and your unlikely to have them unless you specified you want them, and LED's are useless lights for things like the bulbs in your keyboard or computer monitor to say things are on/off :p A picture would confirm what you have. Have your lights on between 7-9 hours thats the best bet. You can pick which period of 9 hours you'd prefere ;)

Without knowing the exact product of ferts your using i can't recommend whats best for them. A search for Columbo ferts comes up with fruitless information based on the company and not a product. A picture or link would help us to assist you here perhaps.

As with the ferts on the estimate of 1ml per 50 litres of water i would recommend you to dose 2ml daily (in the morning). This is an estimate as i havnt got a bottle of Flourish Excel to read the instructions :) But thats what i would do.

The recommended hourly turnover for a planted tank is x10 the volume of your tank, so for you it would be 900lph - which is practically undo-able. Not unless you like water skiing conditions in your tank. So don't worry about this. The upgrade your planning is sufficient i would say for what you want to achieve.

Thank you i will take some pics and start dosing the 2ml fert in the moring untill i get hold of something better. Much more of it is turning yellow now and dying away.

I have also noticed my red water lily that was growing well from a bulb has a brown patch on one of it leaves, i had to move this plant to a different position in the tank when i replanted with all my others could this have caused this or is it similar to the fert thing with the vallis.

I had vallis spirallis in my tank and even though its meant to be a hardy fast growing plant it didn't grow at all and died. I think liquid carbon kills it and on top of that my water is fairly soft, which it doesn't like either.

I know everyone has a different "personal" experience.

My boyfriend has some in his tank; lots of natural light and its growing straight (I did read if you don't have enough light it will grow straight).

I had some in a cold water tank and I kept finding leaves all over the tank so I've moved it; although I think it was beginning to produce a runner and didn't look like it was loosing any leaves; (V.low light tank), and I have some in a low light tropical tank; I think I counted 4-5 baby plants starting to grow (no ferts, no CO2, no light, except natural light).

I suddenly have a vague feeling that Flourish Excell actually kills Vallis. I've read it somewhere i'm sure. Its something i havnt had to deal with or think about in a long time so i sort of forgot about it, but i'm sure i'm right in saying this. If so thats not good lol, sorry.

I had Vallis in a tank with 1.5WPG, with no CO2. Photoperiod was 10 hours of x2 30W(i think) T8's. Although i found dead floating leaves all around the tank constantly it kept sending out runners and formed a dense clump. Albeit the leaves were horrible and looked like a patchy wooden roof with slats missing everywhere, thats the easiest way to describe it...but it lvied none the less!

One of my vallis plants has completly lost its leaves they melted away at the bottom many of the others are losing them aswell. many of the remaining ones have got see through, brown and like you dicribe. There are still some green ones tho. Ive left the root in the soil should i remove it or leave it and hope it send out more.

I am planning on switching to a store brought co2 diffuser thing, it was £25 and came with release bubble thing and a bottle to attach it to. I dont know the name of it but hoping this would be better.

I tested my water and all the stats were 0 inclucing nitrate could this be the problem lack of nitrogen, ive added some fish and nitrogen has gone up to 5 which is my tap water.

I love this plant its really pretty so i will be sad if i can not grow it.

Thanks

Those CO2 devices are rubbish. Don't waste your money. If your tank is small then DIY yeast method is better.

It's worth noting that nitrate test kits are very unreliable. Your plants are the best test kit you have.

The other thing i did not mention was that i planted 10 plants in a row about 2inches from glass to form a back drop should i have planted them differntly like in small bunches along the back. Has this affected them.
