Hi all, I am clutching at straws asking here really as I have been to the vet with my red eared terrapin today. The vet thinks she is in kidney failure :-(, she has only been off her food a couple of days, but I just didnt like the look in her eyes (stilly I know, I just felt something was wrong) she is also starting not smell right. I have to give her a corse of antibiotic injections and take her back next week. The vet says she is a good weight and not to worry (ha ha ha) he did say that 30 years old is very good and her general condition is excellent, but it doesnt make me feel any better that I might loose her.

Has anyone here had a turtle who's kidneys failed? what can I do to make her most comfortable?

just monitor the water temp, air humidity basking temp, water quality and keep with the antibiotics. my gf has an adult yellow bellie slider female with a 12/13 inch shell she is brill lol

I don't know about kidney failure in turtles, but kidney failure in animals in general, isn't a good sign i'm afraid and usually ends up with them go downhill very quickly. Although admittedly if she was in a bad state the vet would surely have put her down.

She does look a little brighter this morning and has had a bite at some chicken, not much but its something. I am hoping its a kidney infection, not failure, but she is old :-(

awwww...i truely hope she gets better...i have a painted turtle and i love her to death...so i can imagine your worries...keep us posted and good luck to her.
eating is a good sign!!! so keep up hope! try supplementing more vitamins too if she is eating. if you have some reptile vitamin dust just roll the food around in it before you feed her 3 times a week. might help her fight off the nasty along with the antibiotics. worth a shot!
BEST of luck for you and your little turt!
cheers

She is very lathargic this morning :-( she showed no interest at feeding time. I have raised the temperature of the water a bit as she is no longer comming out to bask. Her tankmate (the same age) is lying on the bottom next to her, I know this sounds silly but she looks worried, they have been together all their lives.
