Hi,I put my female with the male today and he chases her and flares and runs back to his nest.Sometimes the female follows and trys to mate with him.But he just errects his fins and does nothing, sometimes he chases her away again. What is going? on

from what I have read and understand, everything you have just said is completely normal when they are spawning. I would keep them together (and it's normal for him to nip at her fins some) unless you see he is really attacking her. I have had the same problem, except my male has stopped building a bubble nest, and she's ready to go! Has the female filled with eggs yet?

shes a little fat nothing huge.I have a problem,I have not got a polystyren cup so i cellotaped the bottom ofa coke bottle to the corner of the tank,But its coming off quite abit.If i touch it i will ruin his next and if i leave it it will ruin his nest.

Have you watched them the whole time? Is it possible they may have already mated and he is now guarding his nest? If you are not sure, look closely up at the nest and the male. If you see what looks like grains of salt falling and he is catching them, it may have already happened.

there is nothing in the nest. The female is hiding all the time and the male keeps reparing his bubblenest then looks for the female.Idon't get these two lol.

are the cups essential?

the are usually used to hold the nest but i guess you can do it without, some people use a IAL leaf

i would have to order them so that would be abit to long.Should i leave the light on over night?

That is SO funny! Mine do the exact same thing. Well mine no longer makes much of a bubble nest, but he did when I put them together. She would hide though, or just stay at the top corner totally ignoring him. He would make the bubble nest and stay busy for awhile and then go swim by her or just wave his fins like "look at me!!!", but she wouldn't even look at him. After awhile he would even hit his fins on her and she would ignore him completely! Eventually he would grow impatient and nip at her, scaring her away even more. I stayed up from about 9pm-1:30am thinking they would mate "any minute" and nothing ever happened! Now, she is in a larger aquarium and is VERY interested but he isn't...go figure. But don't be discouraged, I think my situation is more rare. It does take awhile for them to mate. I would keep them together, unless he hurts her. It may take her hours to approach him. How big is the tank they are in? One girl on here said it took her 3 days to mate a pair once.

it is 12.5g (2ft long0.It has 6inch of water in with java moss dotted round the tank for hiding places.I hope they spawn.

Patience is a virtue when breeding bettas, just be patient, as long as they're not damaging eachother they can stay together till they spawn, it can take anywhere from a few hours to a few days depending on the fish.
