I was looking for ways to get her to spit the fries without stripping (she is very skinny right now), so I tried the following on a female who has been holding for about 20 days...

I turned off the filter, and injected hatched brine shrimps right in front of her!

Result? She kind of reacted to it, tried to eat a bit, failed (of course). I was hoping that she would feel comfortable releasing the fries since there's food for them. Grrr, she still want to hold on to them, so I guess I'm going to keep her in that holding tank for another week and see if she releases them.

if she is noticeably skinny, i would strip her. she is close to releasing the fry anyways. i have some mothers that will hold onto the fry for longer periods of time. also will release the fry and let them reenter if they so desire. for these, i strip to ensure the health of the mother.

When do you normally strip yours?

i have only stripped the females if i notice a problem, like a dramatic loss of weight. usually it is about at the 2-2.5 weeks mark. if they seem fine with holding, then i just let them spit the fry when they are ready.

I just did my first ever stripping!! Fries were of good size - no egg yorks. But only 7 fries... Odd since I'm assuming this is her 2nd holding (no way for me to prove though it is the same female) and the 1st spawn was 13 fries. I'm observing her in the tank to see if she is still holding more in her mouth. I will be feeding her shortly to see if she eats...

Stripping process wasn't anywhere near as bad as I thought it would be, quick 30 secs, mostly in water... ;)
