Hi
in my old tank (had it 18 months) i had a fluval filter
Today the filter "died" and i had to buy a new one (different make and model)

Will my fish be ok? teh severums seem to be up near teh surface

am i being paranoid?

Did you save any of your filter media from the old filter? Most of the work of having a good filter is in the mature bacterial populations you have established that perform the "biofiltration" function of the overall filter system.

Regardless, you are probably now in what we call a "Fish-In" cycling situation. You, unfortunately, will have to "be the filter" yourself, by performing daily (or frequent) water changes to keep ammonia and nitrite(NO2) always below 0.25ppm, as the filter would be doing.

i had two fluvals in the tank, one is still working and the other is the new one i have just put in
???

Oh, that's different! Hopefully the old filter will handle things and the new filter will cycle in a month or so by being there on the tank. You will need to test though, to see if the single filter is keeping ammonia and nitrite at zero, if not then water changes will be in order.
