i have a 54 litre jewel rekord 60, what are the best fish for a community, i want colourful fish, active, not many bottom dwellers

any recommendations?

For most people the starting point is to go to your local fish shop and look around. When you see something that you like, bring it back and it will give us a bit of an idea of what to build on for you. Many people like tetras and barbs but I personally prefer the rarer livebearers. It matters more what you like and then you use that to get a balanced tank for your tastes rather than for mine. I will likely never see your tank but you will look at it every day.

you could try a well planted species tank with about 6 platys, they're a hardy species colourful and are very active. the only drawback is that you will have them giving birth every 6 weeks or so and thats going to pose a problem unless you do a survival of the fittest.

another option would be to have a female betta sorority with that tank sive you could fit about 8 in there, female betta's are colourful active and very interesting to watch.

a third option would be to have a nice community tank with tetras and barbs and a few pygmy cories. with lots of plants.

Heres some names to look up:

Platys
Guppies
Mollys
Honey Gourami
Neon / Cardinal Tetra
Rummy Nose Tetra
Ember Tetra

You are slightly restricted by the size of your tank - active fish like Danio's and Rainbows tend to need a bit more room in the long term.
You might get away with a pair of German Blue Rams.

Like oldman says, have a look around your LFS (local fish shop) and make a note of the fish you like. Come home, post the list on here and someone will tell you if they're likely to be okay in your tank. Don't make the mistake of impulse buying though.

And just to check (sorry if it seems patronising) but have you read up on cycling the tank?

clown loaches are schooling fish and need to be in a large group and they would get to big for your aquarium, how about another smaller loach instead?

thanks, smaller loach being which- kuli??

i was thinking of getting 3 corys as bottom feeders- would they be alright with tetra pro crisps or would i have to get them sinking tablets

am i just talking to myself?!

Lol give us a chance - we don't live on these forums!

Corys prefer bigger groups, 5 or more. Any sort of catfood pellets will be fine, and they seem to scavenge their fair share of the leftovers.
Clown loaches are a big no. Boesmani rainbows get too big as well.

Dwarf gourami's and guppies would need to wait awhile until the tank is more mature (min 3 months imo.) Neon's can be the same (some are hardy, others aren't. Personally I'd wait.)

Platy's, mollies and harlequin rasbora's will be fine, as would the rams. The only issue is over how many fish you put in.

All of the above will have to wait until the tank is cycled, and as you're doing a 'fish in' cycle that will be a month or so - and you'll have to add fish slowly, one species at a time to give the nitrifying bacteria time to build up in the filter. And do plenty of water changes while you're cycling with fish - 30% every 3 days max.

You can't add many of each species as you're looking at a pretty hefty list already.

Have you bought a decent (API or Nutrafin) liquid drop based testing kit? If not, get one. The API freshwaster master test kit is the one I use.

the only problem I see with corys or loaches is if the substrate is to rough wouldn't it damage their underbellies? I don't have to much experience with loaches/cories so I'm sorry I can't tell you more.

Depends on the substrate, I've got corys in a tank with pea gravel (I think thats the official name - small rounded gravel) and they're happy enough. I've toyed with the idea of redoing their tank with play sand though, it looks alot nicer and I use it in 4 of my other tanks.

i have a black gravel that is about medium sized- bout pea size

i am going to buy a test kit- need advice tho- i was thinking of the tetra 5 in 1 , all i want to test for is nitrite and nitrates isnt it??

is there any other fish that you belive would be suitable for my aquarium , and are harlequin rasboras hardy??
