As for the test kit, most people go for either the API Freshwater Master Testing Kit or Nutrafin equivilant.
You want to be able to test for Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate, pH and high range pH. This is the one I'd go for, but as long as its the liquid drop based (rather than strips) it should be accurate:

And the gravel should be fine, if its rounded and not sharp it won't do the corys any harm.

ok thanks , the gravel isnt round as suchall different shapes like odd ones /) like this but with the bottom filled in

anybody got any advise on rams as i havnt kept them before
 
Good water quality is the key. Try and get a pair (male/female) to avoid disputes between them. For german blue rams (sometimes sold as just 'Rams' or 'Dutch Rams') the female will have a noticably pink belly.

Like I say, water quality is key. Minimum of 30% a week in my experience, more often than that if you can.
 
can you do any bad by keep on cleaning your tank more often, do you kill the bacteria, also anybody got any advion the dwarf chain loach or any other loaches suitable for 54 litre tropical communitys
