ok guys/gals i think i'll be moving soon(REAL SOON)so i'm planning out a few tanks coz now i'll have the space to have them :D
anyway,i want to give the tropheus a try but i don't want to invest a huge tank for fish i'm not very familiar with,i've heard plenty of horror stories about these fish just up and dying(whole groups at once  )but i won't let that stop me :X

well i know they should be kept in groups but how many can i have in a 29g,i'm thinkin 1m/2fm or 2m/4fm,will this work?

I have 3 in a 58 gallon with a few other fish and this is barely enough room. Tropheus are extreemly aggressive to their own kind so they need lots of space and propably best kept with several to a group. I've heard of people keeping 10 or 12 in a 125 gallon but I'm not that dedicated to them. They also like to have a lot of algae to grace on. Mine scrape the rocks and flower pots clean. :)

:p you're just an angelphish what do you know :p j/k
do they prefer a long or high tank?

I'll have you know that I don't keep a single Angefish. I would have to say they prefer a long tank. The more surface space the better. And good luck. :p

Most,

I agree with angelphish!! Tropheus are best kept in large groups. I rountinely recommend no fewer than 15-20 per group.

The males are very aggressive towards non dominate males and the dominate males/s are aggressive to the females.

It is not recommended to keep these fish in anything under a 70 gallon tank!! Also it is advised to keep the tank either completely bare or have only one rock/clay pot ect. in the center of the tank to prevent territory disputes.

As for diet....strickly spirulina based diet!!!! Frozen brine maybe once a week, but in limited amounts. They are prone to bloat.

Excellent water conditions or chances of bloat double!!

Thats too bad such a beautiful fish and yet your forced to keep so many with no room for others and such a boring tank :( Sure are a pretty fish though. Where do they come from. Must be and elevated height is this right??

angelphish-CM,thanks for the info, guess they'll have to wait.

btw-angelphish-i hope you know i was kidding

sgtbirch-they'r from lake tanganyika in africa, not sure of the elevation.i agree it's a shame they're so beautiful, yet so darn hard to care for you don't want to bother, :sly: i know ME it won't be long til i have a few dozen ;)
