My boyfriend and i were at walmart yesterday when he found a box in the fish department called triassic triops. Apparently you should not grow them in a aquarium or with alot of other things; but they basically sound like sea monkeys. I am going to buy a little liter container and give them a try. Has any one else tried/heard of these? :fish:

I've never heard of these. I'll be very curious to hear what others say on it. Now I'll have to go have a hunt in MY Walmart. Undoubtedly anything live I put in our tanks the fish would eat it anyways  ....I wonder if these triops are supposed to be some form of fish food....does it say anything about that on the box it all came in? They're animal not plant, right?

I've seen them in stores. I think they work similarly as sea monkeys (instant minipets), but they're different creatures.

We just had a thing about them on IRC. Search google and you will find loads of informatoin.

From what I have read they are very dirty creatures and water changes will kill them. :(

Their eggs have to dry out before they hatch also.

I raised them many years ago. I thought they were very kool.

They are basically the same thing as sea monkeys - instant minipets, as kittycat put it. The package comes with a container to place sediment and water in. I don't remember if it comes with a package of dirt, or if I got some from the yard. It also comes with a package of triop eggs. After so long, the eggs hatch, and tiny triops will burrow out from the mud.
They grow about an inch or so long, and they look just like tiny horseshoe crabs.

You should try them, they are really enjoyable, and very cute. Mine lived for several weeks, and would have probably lived longer if I hadn't of went on vacation and left them home alone.

I can't really give details about caring for them because I had them when I was 9 and I barely remember setting up their environment. I do remember that they were awesome little creatures with big appetites (package should come with food pellets for them) and they were highly active and loved digging in the mud. At times I would even pick one up out of the water for a few seconds and pet it.

I wish I could find them around here again. It's been years since I have seen them :(

Yea, they are sort of like that, except they don't get anywhere near the size of trilobites.

Triops have been around just as long though, and that's probably why the box they come in sometimes says "Triassic Triops."

thank for the replies. i am really excited now  . the box said they can live 20-90 days and thats kinda sad but i hope they might lay eggs.
there is a informational site called
triops.com
thanks again
