I think I'd read on here that some folks had cut their veiltail's fins back. Poor Finn my rescue betta is getting up in age,has a small tumor and the most beautiful long flowing fins but they are dragging him down. He finds it hard to keep himself at the surface to feed at times. I have loads of plants in his tank so he has places to perch and keep himself up. I'm wondering about taking him out and quickly trimming those fins back so he doesn't have the additional drag on his body.
Thoughts? Anyone know if there are crucial veins and the like that I'd risk cutting into?
Thanks in advance!

I wish I could offer advice, but I can't. Good luck though!

Wouldn't his fins just grow back?

I think it would hurt, but, maybe you can put him in some clove oil(i think) to put him in a gentle sleep so he doesnt feel the pain then when your done he will just wake up and be happy and pain free

ummmm.....wont the clove oil kill the thing as some people (personally I dont) use it as a form of euthanasia? Might wanna double check that, wouldnt want anyone to end up killing their fish

I think I've read in small doses it can be used to knock them out. Not sure on that 100% tho.

Im pretty sure clove oil knocks them out, Thats why you put them in clove oil then in alchohol or the freezer, It jsut tmeporarly knocks them out

Ok, still I would not reccomend it. I have read many of debates on here and clove oil has not been approved for euthanasia because you dont actually know if it is knocked out or in a type of coma, and there is a claim that it can also burn the fishes gills. I wish I could find a thread on clove oil from a while back....

Hmm. I've heard that it also kills a fish and also that some people have used it to jsut used it to trim thier fishes veils.. so, it's a 50-50 chance that it will die..

....And if people had also looked properly they would realise it's oft used to sedate puffers that require dentistry.

I have never had this problem as I have always found that the older bettas tend to lose bits off the ends anyway....Just give him tlc, lower water, I know years I mean years ago my dad used to trim goldfish when they had fin rot but they used to invariably die anyway as there wasnt the medication about.

Perhaps someone else will come up with useful information instead of the dribble I am typing....

I would just leave him be..... it's not like the fins really weigh anything..... and maybe they bring him comfort in some fishie way.... we'll never know. :look:

i wouldn't do anything drastic like that if i were you. because he's older, it could stress him out too much. the clove oil may kill him, and taking him out priod or cutting his fins can also be very stressful. he could also develop an infection by cutting them. i would just leave him be and watch him closely as you have been.
