Tree Branch Wood

tannins may be toxic to fish, but most arent. i personally like having my water a yellowish brown color because it makes the water look like its from a lake.

I have used driftwood from a freshwater river (the St. Lawrence). I found a piece that we had brought up from the beach and had been just sitting around for a long time. It is good and old, and was dry. So i soaked it in hot water, hit it with some javex bleach a couple of times, and tried it in the tank. It's probably been in there for a month now and everything is well. I also found some more nice pieces at a relatives' place from a freshwater lake that i may use as well. They look to be very old as well. Just start out with something that is old but not rotting, with no bark and is that gray colour wood goes when it is old. Then soak it alot in very hot water or boil it if you have a big enough pot.

Great thanks. I will give that a shot next time i go up to any of the numorous lakes in new york and try it out in some small tank with some feeders possibly and see if it kills them. After bleaching it what did you do to make sure the bleach had been completely removed from the wood.

I never used bleach, but I just soaked it in water for 2 days, and after that, I boiled it for 30 mins.
