My beautiful Betta fish Levi has got tail rot... It's not THAT bad, but it's definitely noticeable. I'd like to treat him with Melafix...

I just recently switched Levi from his tiny 2 litre tank to a 1-gallon tank... I know guys... But it'll have to do for now.

Anyways... What should I do? I have a nice full bottle of Melafix... But am worried about:

-How much I should put in
-How often I should add
-If I should change water while treating
-Are airstones REALLY necessary?
-How long do I have to treat him?
-What other precautions should I take?

-x-

Levi is:

-Showing vibrant colors
-Still flairs at the mirror
-VERY energetic
-SOMETIMES clamps fins. Not often though.
-Resilient and recovers quickly from stress

Please help me with my current situation, not with the situation of the tank. Mom says I can have her 10 gallon tank once all the fish in it dies... angry.gif

Thanks so much in advance. =)

1 gallon tank not really ideal for a betta. They soon get polluted with feeding and waste.
Plus there to small once you have added substrate, plants, ornaments, heater, filter.
How often do you maintain his tank.
Water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.

Finrot is mainly caused by bad water quality.
Melafix is only good on nipped fins, and once fins are healing.
You really need a bacterial med for bacterial finrot.
Yes you need extra aeration in the tank as meds reduce 02 in the water.,
Follow med instructions on dosage.
Depends on how bad the finrot is when treating.

Thanks.

I changed his water once every 3 days while he was in his smaller tank... Not sure how often I should do it now... There is still no filter or anything... There is just one single plastic plant.

That sucks- I really have no other meds to treat him... D: As for the water parameters I will take them now... Hang on for a few minutes.

Keep him in the 1 Gal is fine. They do better in 2.5 or 5 Gal.

The best way to fix Fin Rot is with clean water. You don't even need meds. If you do a 100% water change every other day or no less then once a week he will be fine. They normally get fin rot due to dirt water. If you were keeping him in a tank that was smaller then 1 Gal that water gets dirty very fast and will always increase the chance of fin rot.

I would only put maybe 2 drops of that med in once a day. Do regular water changes and he will be fine.

I have saved bettas with fin rot many time and I never use the meds I just keep the water super clean and it will fix it's self. :fish:

Thanks so much. I love natural remedies. Water changes, I can definitely do. =) And thank you for not beating me up over the tank size.

Water Parameters are:

Ammonia= 0.25 PPM
Nitrite= 1.0 PPM
Nitrate= 5.0 PPM

PH I didn't test.

You you definitely need to change the water. You don't have a filter do you. So change the water as much as you can will help a lot.

You want to keep all your levels at 0.0 if you can. When keeping them in non filtered tanks 100% water change is best.
