Top Fish.........

In the tank are

3 x clown loaches

...

and some apple snails

That is a recipe for disaster! The clowns will hound the snails until they are dead I suspect.

I've got Danios and Gouramis living in the top level. Danios are dull fish colour wise, but really very funny to watch, chasing each other around. Maybe 8 leopards in a tank like that?

Thanks for all the suggestions :)

I'm gonna look into what had been suggested and let you know what I decide on.

One fish I wont be getting that has been suggested is another gourami, they can be miserable sods.

I don't think my 3 clown loaches have read they are meant to like snails, as well as the various size apple snails I have in my tank, I also get the small pest snails when I buy new plants and they don't get touched.
Yesterday when I fed my fish I put in the sinkable wafers and noticed one of the clowns was trying to eat a wafer while getting crushed at the same time by half a dozen apple snails :/

Sometimes natural eating methods are given up for the easier, hand-fed option.

Paul.

Hi all :D

Decided to get some zebra danios, pretty they are too.

In the tank are 3 silver tipped tetras, one of them thinks it owns the tank and patrols the front of the tank at all times, it goes for anything that comes in its way, big or small, any suggestions on what I can do to stop this happening?

Danios are little psychos, I would not be concerned for their welfare. They will be too busy zooming around chasing each other about to be bothered by anything else, let alone a silver tip tetra. If you're going to have a problem, it'll be the other way round I think.

How many you going to get? Make sure it's 6+ to get the best out of them.

Would you like a sportsman's bet on the snails by the way, just for a bit of fun? I reckon that by 2007 you won't have any.

This silver tip tetra is the boss, trust me!!

I'm gonna get 10 danios today, do you know if it right that you can "sex" them by the silver/gold strips?

I'll have a sportsmans bet with ya and I'll provide photographic evidence  Theres more chance of a clown loach being crushed by an apple snail.

Well he's going to be a very busy boy if he decides he wants to try and bully 10 danios!

Are you getting zebra danios? I have leopard danios. I seem to recall when I first got them that the size of the fish relative to the others (female = bigger), and the shape of the belly (more rounded = female), was how to sex them. I could be totally making that up though, it's been nearly 2 yrs since I looked into it and I don't have any interest in breeding them.

You want to talk to The-Wolf. Do a search for Male or Female by him, and one of the threads that turn s up is bound to be about sexing danios.

One day Fifi, one day you will have snails under siege and it'll be game over for them. We shall see what the situation is after Christmas.

He's a very busy boy now, lets hope this solves his bossyness.

I will go and see whats available and decide from there, but I think it will be zebras. I don't have ANY interest in breeding them either thats why I wanna try "sex" them, I have no more room what with all the mollie babies and 3 tanks is pushing it now :grr:

I will do that, thanks!!

Hehe.......well remembered!!

Well I've lost one clown loach so only got 2 just now but as for the apple snails they are still going strong and breeding daily. I bought 3 bengal loaches last month and as soon as they went in the tank they were eating the baby snails, so I think I've won our bet as my clowns haven't read anywhere they're meant to like snails or they're just lazy buggers!!

Ah well, I stand corrected, the clown loaches have not eaten the snails yet. Damn it ;)

If you think Danios are dull colourwise then you have some bad lighting in there. They may look Silver and Black under basic lighting but when you use really good colour lights (like I have for plant growth) they have very very reflective scales and there are blues reds etc all over, lovely coloured fish.

I'm running 2 4ft long tropical lamps and 1 4ft long standard bulb, never really considered that I might have a problem there.

They do have a greeny irridescence to them if you look closely, but they've never been what I'd call a colourful fish. Not when you've got breeding Kribs to look at for example.
