Tomorow i get to set up my 26 gallon tank for the like 5th time in its life time tomorow i have to empty it out, take it downtairs, clean it out, clean ALL gravel and get it back upstairs and fill it up again so its gna take a long time and alot of splashingbut its a very nce tank has everything in it so im hoping it will be very nice

How long will i havwe to wait for the tank to be cycled and i would like to a fish cycle cos i cant bear seeing the tank empty so what fish are cheap and good for cycling my tropical tank?

That's true, Danios are commonly used for cycling tanks but you should have a plan for them when the cycle is done. Will you keep them or what?

Yes i will keep them and maybe have them instead of the tetras i planned on having and im gna have t change my mind about kuhli loach cos ihhave gravel which is quite dark and maybe abort the idea of corydoras as i wont be able to see them

Fishless cycling is just so much better
And unless you really want Danios for years to come in your tank, are you sure you want to have them in your tank ?
For your 26 gallon you're probably looking at 2 weeks approx.

It'll take just under 2 months if you cycle with the danios (or any fish for that matter) as you'll have to do water changes every other day to keep them alive. It's very irresponsible to cycle with fish just because you don't have the patience to wait IMO. If you fishless cycle, it'll take about 2 weeks so you won't actualy be waiting as long. Plus you'll be able to add all the fish at once once that's done whilst, if you cycle with the danios, you'll have to add fish gradualy - say 2 every week or so. Most importantly, you won't be risking anyone's life.

Read the link in my signature about fishless cycling. It's realy very easy to do. Just use some pure ammonia and add a few drops daily. If you don't have pure ammonia, put some fish food in the tank and leave it there. Once it's all melted away, add some more. Keep doing this until you can see ammonia and nitrIte are at 0 and nitrAtes are high. Then do a 90% (or larger if necessary) water change to bring nitrAtes down to 40. At this point it's safe to add some fish and you should do so within 4 hours after that last big water change.

have you got an established tank at all as when I got my tropical tank I put the new filter beside my existing filter in the established tank. Had it is there for about 2 weeks and everything is cool now

Like I said, fishless cycling is the fastest and easiest way. Not to mention that you need to be able to add lots of fish at once if he's giving you all his fish - which you won't be able to do if you try to cycle with danios or platies or whatever. Deffinately do a fishless cycle.

However, the fish your uncle has may not necessarily be suitable for your tank. Make sure you know what you are getting and perhaps suggest he gives them to his LFS instead if they are not going to be happy in your tank.

Agree 100% with everything Sylvia says
Fishless cycling = fastest = safest = best for your fish = minimal stress on YOU for having to deal with potentially sick and stressed (or dead!) fish for several months.

Why not ask your uncle for the filter media at the same time as you take the fish?

Instanly cycled tank that way and you don't have to cram the fish in with Danios that are so active they'd just aggitate the Rams anyway.
