Today From The Fish Room

Nah, i'm really unhappy with the brackish tank at the moment, after losing most of the fish in 3 seperate freak incidents over the last 9 months all there is left in is is 3 common monos, 3 red scats, 1 G.tile moray, a toadfish that no one ever sees and a big Dorminator goby that is the biggest wuss i've ever known and hides if anyone even walks in the room. The selection of brackish fish available is so small that finding anything interesting is almost impossible and when anything does come its always too small to add. I would really like to change the tank to something different like a Tanganykian set up or put a couple of small rays in it but the mrs likes her brackish fish so i'm stuck with them since this is the only tank in the living areas of the house and we have to agree what goes in :/

Waste of 150 gallons of water.

what a shame :/

i was thinking about making the 100g into a brackish community once the other tank is up and running,i might give it a miss if its that limited

If you want to keep large predatory type fish then personally i'd give it a miss, once you have the salt in the water and the fish have reached adult sizes you are pretty much stuffed for adding anything new, ive added a moray and a puffer in the last 3 months and both were eaten despite me thinking they were big enough.
Brackish fish are different and it does have the advantage of being something new to try with fishkeeping but i now find it boring and a chore to do any work on the tank. Hopefully the new collecting seasons might bring some interesting imports in and my interest will come back but if not i fear the tank will just be neglected until it goes into melt down.

CFC, can you get some better pictures of the Cephalosilurus? Or a link to similar species on planet catfish :)

I want an electric eel.

OHh.... I thought its head looked like a fowleri, but i knew you wouldnt put one in your tank with all those other fish. You wouldnt.... right? :shifty:

So when are you going marine Pred CFC? :shifty: Easily done mate, some live rock, sand, powerheads and a nice large protein skimmer and you basically away. You dont need anymore light than you have on those existing set-ups, and you can have awsome eels, lionfish, puffers and triggers! (Ok, so youve already got FW eels and puffers, but marine fish have nicer colours! )

SW doesnt really interest me to be honest, to keep anything i'd like your talking about having 2 or 3 fish in a 200 gallon tank and that just doesnt justify the outrageous costs of the live rock you'd need in a tank that size, not to mention the cost of the salt to start it up.
I have always liked Panther Groupers so if i ever got bored with the FW stuff i woud probably do a fish only with one of those and a few other fish, but if i wanted to buy fancy rocks i'd take up gem collecting, would probably be cheaper in the long run.

Do you mind if I use this quote when discussing anything to do with my tank with my hubby?
Why do people who see a big tank (esp with rays) think that it must be either SW or why is it not?
FW predators are waaaaaaaaaay better and we don't have to worry about those purdy expensive rock dying. More money can be spent on FOOD!
Looking good man, loving those tanks!

where did you get the peacock bass??? i really need one now

Great fish, and a hell of a lot of water

I have a question though, how come none of your tanks seem to have anything in them but fish ( plants, wood etc) You just not interested in aquascapeing?????

When dealing with large tanks, most decor is either ridiculously expensive or gets dwarfed. It also takes up swimming room, and with fragile fish like rays that can't be treated with most meds, anything that has the potential to cause injusry is a nono. Plus big fish like to decorate to their own tasted, given the oppertunity :sly: Plus CFC much prefers the fish to the tank, and I don't blame him :p

very nice .

So no more fish in your house ?

they have their own place now :)

That's awesome and then some, CFC. Some of those are game fish, not aquarum fish. It always amazes me when I can identify fish in someone's tank from McLane's New Standard Fishing Encyclopedia. Dorados and Peacock bass and Arowanas, Mine Gott! I am deeply, deeply impressed.
