To Back Or Not To Back

For display tanks I prefer to paint my glass black- more permanent, no blotches like one gets from water between the glass and background. For breeder and grow out tanks I tend to go bare bottom as well as backgroundless,

yep works perect

I might try it one time, I'm sticking with what I have at the moment though. A random background stuck on with a bit of double sided cellotape! :hyper:

Do you now? :hey:

Just kidding  :D

I use a shop bought background. My tank has a plastic trim top and bottom, with a tiny gap between the plastic and the glass. I slide the top and bottom of the background into this gap, and it sticks to the tank without using tape, vaseline etc. This only works with the stiff plastic backgrounds, it wouldn't work with fluttermoth's bin bags

I dont use any backing on my tank, just dont really like them.
I read that backing gives more depth to the tank and hides wallpaper ect, but i dont think it serves any purpose for the fish. As we have plain walls the tank looks ok without one, but that just personal choice.

Backing makes the fish feel more secure.

I would always go with backing.

+1

You can get the plastic scene backgrounds to fit nicely with just sellotape.
Keep it pressed to the tank glass for a week or so to allow it to get to the tanks temperature and stay there.
Then fix it with the tape and it will be fine.

I haven't had a background for 2 years but I have one on the way in the post because its really boring without one and it makes plants stand out if you get something like black. I'm getting one with rocks so I'm hoping mines will look a lot better with it.

I wouldn't be able to cope without a background, I think it looks too cheap.

I just like a background so you see no wires etc!! and I have a pink wall behind the tank where it isn't painted!! haha

We have got one of those Marina 3D foam backgrounds in our 180. No problems with it yet and it looks fab :good:
