Hi all….

I'm toying with the idea of setting up my old 5 gal tank to house a Betta.

This 5 gal tank is hexagon shaped and has an under gravel bubble pump and a small light cleverly pre-installed and doesn't take up room in the tank...

I'll need a small heater and a small biological filter to do my fishless cycle.

I’m trying to browse the internet to see what types of small filters and heaters are available but I’m not really finding anything suitable for my tank...they are still quite big and bulky.

I want to find something that doesn't take up loads of tank space.

What is the smallest sized biological filter available suitable for a 5gal?

I believe an Elite 25w heater is sufficient for this size tank, but is there a neater sized heater I can get?

Thanks :good:

modaz sells little heater pads that keep your tank a few degrees above room temperature, i think you put them underneath your gravel

for filter just buy a small sponge filter that is powered buy an airpump

Thanks Orange shark....

Hmmm, can't seem to find anything on Modaz heaters when I do a search online? I'll keep trying.

Anyone have a link to a shop that sells them?

So, a small sponge filter, you say....I wonder would that work off the bubble pump thats fitted on the tank? Its like a valve...a 'non' reture valve I think its called....would the sponge filter work off this?
Edited to say: Non Return valve I meant! ;)

Now, one last thing....I just did a measurement on my tank...its actually 4 US gals/15 litres.

Is that too small for a Betta? -_-

there are tiny filters to be had...somewhere. I have a 1.6 gallon tank that has a teeny tiny filter in it.

Yes, Lioness is right, I've seen threads on TFF where members have recommended or given links to people for tiny filters. Can't pull one up now but thought it might help to know there should be some out there...

I've used an AquaClear 20/mini power filter on a 7 (US) gallon for many years and I was satisfied with its performance. The water flow could be decreased a bit and it would work well with a 5 gallon.

Another small power filter option (although it might be too small) could be a Red Sea Nano or an Azoo Mignon 60 filter. I used a Red Sea on a smaller betta container and was happy with it after I used modified media from an AquaClear rather than the crappy supplied stuff.

Thanks!!Thats great info!!

Plus after doing loads of searching, look what I found also...Suitable for aquariums up to 10 gallons! So it must be small!

This filter incorporates foam sections that can be individually cleaned. A carbon sachet is also included, and the filter is supplied with a fine airstone, adjustable direction outlet and a cradle to attach the filter to the aquarium glass.

Internal Air Filter Components:

Removable filter lid
Air outlet
Replaceable Airstone
Filter foam for biological & mechanical filtration
Carbon provides chemical filtration

Only thing is I notice it needs to be contected up to an air pump....again, I wonder could I use it with the valve I have in the tank?

Also, for heaters...this looks good.

Adjustable temperature control
Computer calibrated assembly, accurately maintains temperature
Power indicator light
For freshwater and saltwater use
For 2-5gal aquariums

Mini 7.5 watt aquarium heater is great for small aquariums from 2-5 gallons. Helps increase temperature by a few degrees (4°F-5°F) above room temperature. The extra small, flat size (2½” x 5½”) allows you to place it out of sight. For use in glass or acrylic aquariums. Fully submersible and UL listed.

Edited: my links aren't working..Doh!

By the way, forgot to say in the other post Gazoo....the Azoo Mignon 60 filters sounds absolutly perfect....Its suitable for tanks up to 4gals...thats great!

The Red Sea Nano would actually be too small for my tank...amazingly!! as it only deals with water up to 3 gals....

Thanks everyone....I'm delighted....I got a perfect answer to my question...

Now, I just need to see I do actually need a seperate air pump or will the integrated air pump in my tank be sufficient?

Why not get a little external Hang on back filter like this http://www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/fish/filters...r_filters/19456

from what I understand the unit stay out of the water only the litte tube goes in teh water

Thanks Ace of spades...they look good, but only start at a tank size of 40Litres, so that would be too powerful for my 15Litre/4gal tank...

....actually you've just highlighted a small problem...my tank has a lid....so I'll only be able to go for a submersible filter like the 'Interpet internal air filter' or the 'Elite Mini Underwater'

All the others such as the Azoo mignon filter 60 and the Red Sea Nano etc hang over the side, I think?

Ah!!! That would explain it!!

By the way, here is a picture of my 4gal tank....so you'll see why I'm trying so hard to find micro sized equipment.

Be honest now....Do you think I'm wasting my time with this type of tank for a betta? -_-
