Tinfoil Barb

Ive two of the above tropical fish in my large rio 300 tank, They seem to be picking on each other or either that playing, When getting them yestarday the woman told me to buy the two as they should be in groups..

Should i get another to see what happens? there about 15cm long each

anyone else have these? what problems?

They are a schooling fish so 2 won't cut it. You will need another 2-3. Thats typical behavior for tinfoils when not in a group.

Thanks, Would they be ok for a few weeks or should i add 2 more ASAP? They cost a bloody bomb at my local shop aswell (£10)

these fish get over a foot in length so I'm not sure your tank is an ideal size for them. Maybe post in the 'barbs' section for some advice?

His tank is big enough for a group of about 5. You might still see some bickering with only 4 Barbs

Sorry no the tank is not big enough even for one, these guys grow massive, i had a group in my 566litre and i ended up rehoming them as my 5/2/2ft tank was no where near enough space, sorry but instead of buying more,rehome these and go for something smaller, look at something like spanner barbs or ticto barbs...

Went back to the shop today that i got them from, i was told they are fine in my size of tank and they will be fine as a pair as thats what they had them in.

Well putting it bluntly you have a choice, take advice from the members here who have told you their opinions and you may just learn something OR you take advice from the lfs and continue with the problem you`re having with the 2 barbs you have.


I really don`t intend to be rude, but I know which option I`d go for

Ok shops keep fish in tanks you'd never keep one in for life, there a business, usually fish being there for very short periods, lets put it this way, this was my three, and you can see here how big they are, tanks 5foot / 2foot / 2foot.......This was not fullgrown, they grew bigger than this, iam telling you for you and the health of the fish, wether you choos to hee'd the advice is your choice
