Time To Euthanize?

Thanks so much for all the info. I know that ice is very numbing and thought that humans drift off to sleep and pass away, so I wondered if that would be the better route. Thanks again.

No problem. I thought the same thing and then a member of this forum said, basically it's like humans, slowly getting colder and colder and your body expanding from all the water inside it. It jsut sounded liek an awful experience to me after they put it liek that :(.

Some people say overdosing on clove oil or medication can work too. But I'm not to convinced that would work either (well the clove oil, not the meds). I knwo the meds for sure doesn't work. Melefix and primafix are soem of the most lethal medicines out there if you overdose, well my girlfriend was working in walmart over the summer (she cleaned up the pet department only to have it go back the way it was after she left to go back to college :() and she had a goldfish that got stuck itn the filter system and was just in a really bad way. I recommended what I've heard... overdose on a medicine. It's supposed to act like clove oil and put them to sleep while actually killing them painlessly at the same time. Well she put the goldfish into straight melafix (no water at all), the goldfish wouldn't die!!! Hours went b and the fish was still acting like nothing was wrong. So much for an instant death huh? I told her, hmm... I think that was a bit off lol.

Just throwing out some others. Soem peopel wrapp up the fish with plastic wrap and smash it against the wall... I couldnt do that. Others have wrapped in plastic wrap and then placed a dish towel over the fish and then smashed it with a hammer, again to greusome for my taste  . But I'm just throwing some more ideas out your way.

Freezing may work witha strong enough dose of clove oil, it would be liek dieing in your sleep, that's why I suggest it as a means of euthenizing. What human wouldn't want to die while they were sleeping? They don't care what happens to them, but while they are sleeping they can't feel anything. It's the same with fish.

Another more extreme method in my opinion, is some take the fish to a vet, but I read a recent thread on here, that someone talked to a vet and they said that its sad because fish don't die as quick from those injections like other animals, the fish take much longer to die. With that and the cost, I think this method (the vet) is not the way to go.

Again, I'm sorry, but I'm just informing you on methods, jsut in case it comes down to this. It's beeter to knwo what to do ahead fo time, then to "wing it" euthenizing and watching the fish suffer a slow painful death, if it comes to it, I'm sure you want it to be as quick and painless for the both of you.

I wish there is something else I could do, if there is, please let me know...

Thanks nevergone--love your name. I called a local vet and they actually recommend freezing. I agree with you on all your comments. It's impossible to get your dying fish out of his tank, hold him down and smash his head without him totally stressing out and probably fighting. I have clove oil, and will use it in heavy dosages, then freeze him. I did that once before, and this fish reacted for a few seconds then immediately went under. Hate to do it, and sooooooo appreciate your kind words.

I understand where you are right now, so it's easy for me to relate.

As for freezing and using clove oil before... you said you used it before with successs, let's not mess with success. As for freezing, please let me know if it works here to. I might go with that method myself for future euthanizing :good:

Edit: btw, the name isn't a backstreetboy song lol. When I think of it, I think of our fishy friends. NeverGone... NeverForgotten I'm actually going to make that into a signiture thing. :D

I didn't even know there was a backstreetboy song==lol. I thought it meant exactly what you said--it's a beautiful name. I plan to use the clove oil and then freeze for double insurance that he is in fact dead. That's what I did before.

I'm so sorry that it's come down to this  But I do think that its for the best. Please let me know how the clove oil/freezing method works :good: and :friends: *hugs* for you!

Thanks, everyone's been sooooo supportive and so understanding. I could not do it last night. We took pix of him and in the pix he didn't look so bad. But in reality, he actually appears to have lumps inside of him. I can't remember when I felt this conflicted. Sometimes I wonder if it's normal to feel this distraught over fish. I am truly saddened, and as usual, swearing off bettas, but I know that won't last long.

I 100% know how you feel, over the summer I lost my 2 favorite bettas in the whole world... A female named mercury who I'd had for 4 years, she was my first female ever, and the most personable fish in the world. And then this little white vt male named Tic-Tac, he was the sweetest thing in the world and I was more attached to him then I was to any other fish (except maybe mercury) I lost them both within 2 weeks of eachother and it completely tore my heart... I swore off bettas, but it didn't last... Once you love a betta, you love them all and it's impossible to stop even after heartbreak. So BIG HUGS!! Feel better, and I know you'll do the right thing.

Oh, how heartbreaking--I'm so sorry for your losses. I think I remember reading about mercury on the site. Tic-Tac --what a cute name--I can just picture him. You know, with the extreme joy of owning a betta, comes the extreme anguish when we lose one. We have to keep buying bettas--at least for awhile they are happy with us. Thanks again.

Maybe it was one of those "other sites" I sometimes visit. This is my favorite one, though.

So any luck with recovery yet?

None. I mixed clove oil in some tank water, shook vigorously, placed him in the mixture and he immediately passed out without a bit of struggle. Then I waited an hour and put the container in the freezer. It was very sad, but seemed peaceful and he's not suffering anymore. Poor baby.

You are brave to do that but it was for the best. I am feeling very depressed today so hugs for you and tears for your little fish :good:
