Time To Euthanize?

im not sure if you have or havent, but i wish you and snowball all the best

:good:

Aww, thanks. Have not. I'm at work. Snowball's pix is on my desktop and it's a constant reminder of how much he's deteriorated.

I'm sorry to hear that Snowball is not doing better. I know this has been hard on you.

Thanks, I think he actually ate a few betta bites, though he had no interest in the thawed bloodworms I tried to give him with a dropper. Poor little boy. Since he tried to eat, I'm debating if I give the Maracyn/M2 another try for a week. What would you do?

I too would probably be trying everything I could to save him until it finally hapend :( Very sad, I had two tetras go last night but, they were mean so I wasn't too upset It's really up to you, if you think this could help him then I'd say go for it. If you really think it's just going to make him feel worse then I'd say it's his time. It's hard for us to tell not seeing him and how he is everyday. I'm sorry and I hope he can pull it out!

You made me laugh--in my 20 gallon, I had 5 tetras that I didn't even know existed until feeding time each day--they kept a very low profile. Then I lost 3 to my great distress. So I replaced them after I was sure that the tank and other fishies were ok, and these new guys are mean little suckers--very aggressive. They are right up at the top of the tank at feeding time, and seem to have stirred up the peaceful community that was in residence before their arrival.

I think I would keep trying only because Snowball is. With the majority of fish illnesses, it seems as though they die rather quickly. The fact that he is still hanging on makes me think he is not ready to give up yet.

I would end his life... He's suffering... I don't want to get flammed for this... but sometimes the kindest thing to do for our fishie friends... or any pet... is to just let them go quickly and painlessly.

Right, I'm not ready to give up on him yet either--he's young and maybe he can pull through. I will let you know.

He's pineconing right? Which means his kidneys are failing, it can take 2-3 weeks for that to kill him on its own... and it's a very slow painful death, the fact that he's still alive is because his kidneys haven't completely failed yet... But I can gaurentee he's in A LOT of pain... Poor boy

How is he doing? :good:

He totally shocked me by swimming up and around a little bit, and eating 2 betta bites. I used a dropper to feed him some thawed bloodworms but he was too exhausted. Poor little boy.

I thought it looked like he was pineconing, but when I tried to check last night, I didn't see it. I'm telling you, he is curled up and hiding in places that make it very hard to see. I have a magnifying glass and a small flashlight to get as good a view as I can but it's very hard. If I can really tell that he is definitely pineconing, I will take action, I can't bear to think of him being in a lot of pain.

I understand what you ae feeling. I'm mroe of a NW cichlid person than a betta person myself, but I can relate to the pain you must feel. I've had to put down loads of fish in my fishkeeping tenure, it never gets easier. Could you at least someway get pics? I havn't followed this thread so if this was answered than my apologies. I'll go back and look for pics quickly and see if any were already posted. If the fish is suffering it is ALWAYS best to put them down. Like jaded said, sometiems illness can take weeks to actually kill the fish. Identifying these types of illness takes time of course. I hope that he pulls through for you, I really do, but be prepared for the worst.

I just looked at the original pot you started...

...Snowball's deterioration from tumor, fin rot, and probably a bacterial infection... He hasn't moved off the bottom of the tank is over a week, and has only eaten once in about a week and a half!...

Honestly, it sounds like it's too late. You are prolonging his death by treating, but it will only go so far for so long. IMHO, it may be kinder to just put him down. It's hard, but it may be for the best. I'm sorry.

Well I had a glass catfish that many people advised me to euthanase. But I just couldn't do it. Especially when he perked up. He just kept on fighting. Poor little Fester died after a mistake on my behalf though, but I was so happy I gave him a chance.

Yes, euthanasia is kinder, if you can do it. If he's eating its a good sign. But its horrible seeing them suffer. Poor little baby. :(

Hi, did you get the pix? Those mean IT people have blocked access to photobucket so I can't download pix from here. Have to do it from home. Anyway, I was pretty close to doing it last night, but am so conflicted about how to do it--either freezing or clove oil, but there's so many conflicting opinions on these methods. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Clove oil is a must in my opinion. The only thing is that it simply puts them to sleep. And we're not talking the deep sleep either.

Freezing is a very long process, though ti may be easier for you to bare, imagine yourself being put into a freezer and left there until you froze to death  .

What I do is one of 2 ways after I put them to sleep with clove oil. I either chop off their heads, making sure ot sever the spine first (horrible for most to be able to do) or you could simply boil water and dip them in that. Since they're asleep, they won't even wake up from this. This method can be done without the oil as well as it works pretty quick (within a split second if your water gets to a nice full boil).

I know some will disagree wit hthe above methods and suggest vodka. But after I saw a disgusting youtube vdeo that some kids let their fish live in vodka for a few days and he lived and was fine... I'm a bit concerned about vodkas abilites as a means to euthenise.

If there is anything else you would like to know or somethign else I could help with let me know.

As for the videos, if photobucket doesn't work you can try imageshack. If that doesn't work then I know there's a way on this forum to post pics without those sites, I'm not sure how as I've never used it myself (a photobucket guy here ;) ), so hopefully osmeone else can come along and further help you.

Again, I'm sorry that this may need to be done. I too, understand the pain... (where's a hug emoticon when you need one :()

Thanks so much for all the info. I know that ice is very numbing and thought that humans drift off to sleep and pass away, so I wondered if that would be the better route. Thanks again.
