Tiger Barbs In A Community Tank.

I'm looking for opinions on keeping tiger barbs (mainly concerned about the 5 striped and moss barbs) in a community tank. I currently have around 17 neon tetras, about 6 zebra danios, 1 platy, and 1 large pleco. I plan on getting 5-6 guppies this weekend. I've heard a few differing views on keeping barbs with fish with large fins because of the nipping behavior. Is there a magic number to keep to limit the nipping?

Anyone out there who has had positive or negative experiences please let me know.

i have 9 and they only chase each other and leave the other fish alone (tetra, cory, plec, smaller barb)

I don't have TB's, but only from what I've read, the larger the group, the more likely they are to keep the squabbling in their own group. 10 upwards for a group size....

I am in the process of stocking almost the exact same tank. Currently have 10 zebra danios, 7 tiger barbs, 7 male guppies and one featherfin catfish. So far I have had no problems. There is enough activity to where nobody bothers anyone.

Tiger barbs seem to really become problematic if they are bored. They do best with fast moving, short finned, semi-aggressive fish. I'm still researching ideal tankmates myself that will be suitable, as I have a 75 gallon and can fit a lot more.

So far I've found that you should avoid bettas, angelfish, long finned tetras, and most gouramis. While they are small, tiger barbs can make short work of large slow tank mates if given the chance. Let us know if you find a good combination.
