Tiger Barbs Bit Of Tail Missing

2 of my tigers has a bit of tail fin missing and not growing back. I think i need to add something either melafix or pimafix to help there fins grow back. Can't remember which one is for fins. Is this safe to use at full strength as I have pokadot loach and bristle noses in this tank ?

Hi there.
It's Melafix you're after, which is basically Tea Tree oil (hence the lovely smell)

Should be fine with loaches and bristles as it's not really a full strength aquatic treatment (like Protozin etc), so knock yourself out

You can to a certain extent, but Melafix has been treated and filtered for use with aquatic life. Not only that, but it contains other stuff which they wont release.

I've been treating with melafix for 3 days now. One has stayed the same and the other ones tail fin has got worse. I'm wondering if the other tigers are picking on this one. I know normally when you have a group of tiger barbs the agression is spread out, but could the others just be picking on one. I've not seen any bullying but it could be happening?

The Tea Tree oil in Melafix isn't the same oil as you would buy from the chemist (different species of Melaleuca, plus it also has to be the right strain of that species). Also, you mustn't add pure oil to a tank, as it could form a film over the water. Melafix is processed with a special emulsifier to enable it to mix with the aquarium water.

It's also safe for use with loaches and bristlenoses, or any species in fact.

Mr Spoon, have you checked your water parameters, just to be sure? Otherwise bullying is a definite possibility, but it might be that one of them is just taking longer to get better.

Yes they are. 0 ammonia. 0 nitrite. 10ppm nitrate. Ph 7.8. Temp 25.
One has a bit of new tail growing. The other still hasn't improved and hides at the back alot but comes out to feed.

i would strongly advise salt as i did a 25% water change with salt and my guppies tail seemed to grow back within a couple days
