Last night one of my guppies fins had turned sort of 'threadbare', each fin was pale and transparent and looked shreded right up to the body. (not any kind of fin rot I've seen.)

This had happened only in the last 2 days. it doesn't look like any illness I know. He was lethargic and hanging around the surface obviously not going to make it through the night.

He didn't make it all I found wasd his head this morning - thanks shimp!

but I wonder what it could be, I completely forgot to take a photo. I just hope it wont spread to the rest of them.

i had this happen with one of my guppys at the start of my tropical fishkeeping and noone could tell me what it was :( so im also interested to find out

Hi,

I've seen this happen before in a mate's tank. He and I put it down to fin rot, assuming the idea that fish react to illness/disease in subtly different ways. Fish totally lose their fins if the rot doesn't clear up or isn't treated in time so it might have been a case of the rot having evenly spread throughout the fin instead of 'working its way in' from the edges, so to speak.

Of course, I could be wrong. There are many illnesses/diseases out there for fish to catch.

Luke.

Hi xhan,

Have any more of your guppies suffered similar problems. In cases like this I always look at the other tank inhabitants and I notice that you have some tetras in your tank and they could be your problem. Some tetras are notorious for shredding the long flowing fins of other tank mates.

Remember that even small tetras like neons and cardinals have very sharp teeth, they're related to piranha.

If the problem continues try removing the tetras and see if it does the trick.

Good luck,

Trevor

Welcome to the forum Petfishbreeder.

As you say, some fish have the reputation for being poor tank mates for fish with flowing fins. Sometimes it can be difficult to figure out who the guilty party is and other times it is obvious.
