very interesting if this doesn't work maybe yo u can try and internal one this is a gd design for one a pic i made earlier but would be interesting to see if they actually work please keep us updated

Interesting design. I'm not sure how you are getting water flow accross the screen?

I've used the vertical waterfall style, and it worked well.
Currently I'm using an upflow style like the diagram above.

The water flows into the box. Once the water is in the box to get out the box through the overflow it has to get through the roughed up sewing mesh. I got inspiration from a diy nitrate reactor and a diy algae scrubber which i saw on youtube
