The following is from Wikipedia
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legality_of_cannabis_by_U.S._jurisdiction

In the United States, cannabis is legal in 40 of 50 states for medical use and 24 states for recreational use. At the federal level, cannabis is classified as a Schedule I drug under the Controlled Substances Act, determined to have a high potential for abuse and no accepted medical use, prohibiting its use for any purpose.[2] Despite this prohibition, federal law is generally not enforced against the possession, cultivation, or intrastate distribution of cannabis in states where such activity has been legalized. Beginning in 2024, the Drug Enforcement Administration has initiated a review to potentially move cannabis to the less-restrictive Schedule III.[5]In the United States, cannabis is legal in 40 of 50 states for medical use and 24 states for recreational use. So tonight I am featuring songs about pot. This is not intended to suggest one should use marijuana even if you live where is it premitted to do so. Members from other countries may live where it is legal and oher where it is not. The same applies to you as well. I am not suggestig you use pot whether it is legal or illegal where you live.

You forgot one.

If you like the Rolling Stones there is a live version with Muddy and the Stones.

I bet there were a lot of songs made up about weed, and played live, but for some strange reason the artists couldn't remember them to record them.

When cannabis was legalized here, the low cliff across the road had an endless array of pickup trucks parked in the morning, with beardie boys listening to Nashville country in clouds of smoke. Now that legalization has become normalized, that's become quite rare. I wonder if there was a flurry of night club songs (I think there was) when alcohol prohibition ended in the USA?

Badly written cliche commercial songs often don't say much, but the good "alternative music" writing often reflects what's going on that's slightly different in interesting ways. 1920s music will stand your hair on end with the PTSD generation after world war one and the deadly flu epidemic effects. It's a wonder any of us got to be alive.

Unless you're holding a camera. Then you'll never see it.

Apologies for the intrusion but I have a soft spot for the Kinks and can't resist😍

You thought I forgot again. Just busy and behind on everything.

Jefferson Airplane was an American rock band formed in San Francisco in 1965. One of the pioneering bands of psychedelic rock, the group defined the San Francisco Sound and was the first from the Bay Area to achieve international commercial success.

The October 1966 to February 1970 lineup of Jefferson Airplane, consisting of Marty Balin (vocals), Paul Kantner (rhythm guitar, vocals), Grace Slick (vocals, keyboards), Jorma Kaukonen (lead guitar, vocals), Jack Casady (bass), and Spencer Dryden (drums), was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996.[4] Balin left the band in 1971.[5] After 1972, Jefferson Airplane effectively split into two groups. Kaukonen and Casady moved on full-time to their own band, Hot Tuna. Slick, Kantner, and the remaining members of Jefferson Airplane recruited new members and regrouped as Jefferson Starship in 1974, with Balin eventually joining them.

The Surrealistic Pillow album was released in 1967.

One of my better friend knew Steve and always spoke highly of him. But what more do we need to know than: "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay" is a song co-written by the soul singer Otis Redding and the guitarist Steve Cropper. And then there is this as well:

This weekend I am making sure to post early to make up for last weekend's miss. Mark Knopfler is a pretty amazing musician.

"Mark Freuder Knopfler OBE (born 12 August 1949) is a British musician. He was the lead guitarist, singer and songwriter of the rock band Dire Straits from 1977 to 1995, and he is one of the two members who stayed throughout the band's existence, along with the bassist John Illsley. He pursued a solo career after the band dissolved, and is now an independent artist."

ENJOY! :band:

Sorry to be late posting again. But I had to travel way back in time for this weekend's music. It was all from a time before I was born but of which I am still a fan. It is big band music which was popular in the 1930s and 1940s and even found its way into the 50s.

I am partial to Benny Goodman who taught me to appreciate the clarinet. I have seen both of the movies from which two of the songs below were extracted. In the early years of broadcast television there was a lack of programming. So a lot of what was broadcast when I was growing up int the 1950s and into the 60s there were many movies from the past 40 years used to fill the open air time.

"Writen by Louis Prima in 1935, This is not much of a song from WW2 but it is one of the most famous songs from the Big Band era"
"Eugene Bertram Krupa (January 15, 1909 – October 16, 1973)[1] was an American jazz drummer, bandleader, and composer.[2][3] Krupa is widely regarded as one of the most influential drummers in the history of popular music. His drum solo on Benny Goodman's 1937 recording of "Sing, Sing, Sing" elevated the role of the drummer from that of an accompanist to that of an important solo voice in the band."

(play in 720p or 1008p)

"Sun Valley Serenade is the first of the only two movies featuring The Glenn Miller Orchestra (the other is 1942's Orchestra Wives)."
All Aboard!
(Best aviable is 480p)

So you saw the Blues Brothers 2000 and you think you saw Cab Calaoway.

Gotta do another Glenn Miller. Get in the mood

(play in 720p or 1008p)

Gotta play myself off with one more by Benny. A film clip of Benny Goodman and Lionel Hampton performing the jazz song "Stealin' Apples" in the musical film A Song is Born. "The song Stealin' Apples was written by Andy Razaf and Fats Waller and was first recorded by Fletcher Henderson and His Orchestra in 1936."

This was Benny's smallest "band."

(3690 p is the best there is, but it is decent.)

When I was a kid, Gene Krupa was always dangled before me as a moral tale. The great and admired drummer who succumbed to heroin.

My Dad was the first timewarped musical fan I ever met. He was a drummer, and for him, the music had died with the big bands. Later, I've developed a love of the smaller jump blues bands that followed the collapse of the big band economy. Roy Milton and his Solid Senders, Louis Jordan, Big Jay McNeely and the whole scene around them was fun pre rock n'roll stuff.

Swing records were played in the house and while teenaged me thought it was boring, it gained a toehold and became more interesting as I explored more. I think a lot of the musical styles we like as we age are based on what people around us liked when we very young. Our brains squirrel away the best parts and loop back around to them.
