Finspan is a standalone strategy board game published by Stonemaier Games. Designed by David Gordon and Michael O'Connell (with development input from Wingspan creator Elizabeth Hargrave), it expands the broader "Wingspan" lineage of nature-focused engine-building games, alongside titles like Wyrmspan. Instead of birds or dragons, players take on the role of marine researchers observing and cataloging aquatic life across ocean depth zones.
Key Gameplay Mechanics
- Theme & Setup: Players manage individual player mats depicting three distinct depth zones: the Sunlight Zone, the Twilight Zone, and the Midnight Zone.
- Card Placement & Engine Building: Over the course of four rounds (framed as "weeks"), players play unique fish cards into these habitats. As you send divers deeper into the habitats, activated fish generate resource chains and combination effects.
- Life Cycle Dynamics: Game actions focus on discovering fish, having them produce eggs, hatching those eggs into young fish, and consolidating young into schooling groups.
- Scoring: Victory points are earned through fish cards, eggs, young, schools, and completed end-of-round achievement goals.
