 This is going to be tough. What about one of my favourite fish Geophagus iporangensis

They only get 4" but are shaoling fish so a big group would look amazing.

Looking at the profile, they seem to require acidic "amazonian"-type water. No good for Elise !

Going back to the main point ... bigger fish certainly ARE more sturdy.

Another point to take into account is that so many of the common aquarium fish found at LFS are very poor genetically, through years of inbreeding. Weak stock simply means that they are so much more likely to die early from whatever stressors might be around.
Might be a good idea to look at a different supplier ELise, if you are buying from the same place all the time. Some shops really are not fussy about the quality of their stock at all.

Here's a suggestion for a nice, colourful and characterful community for a 360 litre tank ...

2 x rainbow cichlids
2 x sajica cichlids
1 x firemouth
2 or 3 bristlnose or small plecs
6 x dwarf neon rainbows.

All those should like your water a lot, and are pretty sturdy too. You'd have colour and character from the cichlids, movement and an intersting shoal from the rainbows and some nice cats to go around mopping up after everyone else !

MA in CHristchurch should certainly have all those too !

I`m still veering towards the Malawi or Tanganyikan at the moment. I`ve printed out a list of fish that I like the look of after reading up on them and I`m going to pop over to MA in a bit so I can actually see if they have the fish that I`m interested in.

Not 100% on which way I`m going to go but I don`t feel at the moment that it`s going to be the route of the CA/SA cichlids, the bigger cichlids appear too chunky for my tastes and dare I say it without causing offence to anyone??......ugly :X

kizno, you`re not joking it`s going to be tough!

How about those shell dwelling cichlids? Neolamprologus multifasciatus are cute and nice to look at. My local MA has them in and they are funny things and different. Also, they naturally live in a Ph of 8, so could be easier to keep.

Thanks Beth B-)

They were some of the fish I would have been looking to keep had I chose the Tanganyikan option, but after my visit to MA today I`ve decided to go for the Malawi setup instead. I found what I feel to be nicer, more suitable fish in the Malawi range rather than the Tanganyikans. I just have to start sourcing some rocks and slate in preparation for the change now :look:

What happens to the other fish, Lisa?
Don't tell me your giving up on the Celebes Rainbowfish? :shout:

Carl, I will be selling my current community fish which does include the Celebes I'm afraid. I love the zippiness of the Celebes but I can't keep them unfortunately.
Once I've got all the right stuff to make the change I'll make a thread in the classifieds for selling them but MA have agreed to let me trade the fish in for the Malawis :)

I would have added these to my collection of Celebes, but were too far away

Yeah, it`s frustrating because in some way I`d actually rather give the fish to people who I know would really look after them instead of handing them back to the lfs, but I have to consider the cost of the change so don`t really have a lot of choice to be honest.

Many a time I`ve thought how annoying it is that people live too far for me to have taken on their fish and I fully understand their reluctance and refusal to post because I won`t either, but that`s just the way the cookie crumbles I guess :/
