Thinking Of Changing From Tropical Community To Mbuna Or Tanganyikan

Just to let you know, albeit somewhere closer is bound to have them, World Of Water in Romsey had ~six brichardi youngsters (~3cm) in stock, 2 for £5.

in your tank elise you want around fifthteen cyps as a group.

shell dweller wont really matter aslong as they have a flat area to themselfs for their own terratory. multis are meant to be great to watch. you will want to choose one or many 2 rock dwellers then.

Sorry, I completely missed this

Regarding the cyps, would 4 be ok to start with? I`m going to have to try and source all on my list anyway but wondered if I`m better off keeping numbers smaller to start with?

All of the above are very aggressive, they are Malawi Mbuna's after all, extremely territorial! and very aggressive! (seek the weak=destroy, nasty buggers but fun fish to keep lively tank, lots of hiding places. But they scrap ALL the time. I would go down the Tang road way before the mbuna. They will p*ss you off!!!!

Thanks, i think after the reading I`ve done, that the Tangs would be a better, lesser aggressive option :good:

i missed this aswell lol. 6 might be better. you just want enough so theres enough females to one male. i meant to say one shell dweller and 2 rock dwellers before aswell. lol. a pile of rocks for each one

Goodness me  I'd forgotten all about old Charlie Dimmock's place over there in Romsey......must pop over.

Oh and 'elisew', if you find any Julidochromis regani (Yellow) do let me know and don't buy them all! Also when you are set up and are out this way then you are welcome to a few of my Julidochromis Marlieri

Thanks Goat :good: :D I`ll have to try and drag Liam around the shops once I`m ready to start stocking......bless him
Unfortunately I think I`m going to have to have just 1 of the Brichardi, I really wish they were a lot more placid because I really love the look of them. I`ve been browsing online and have seen an absolutely beautiful Brichardi, I think it was called something like Princess Baurundi?? Not sure it`s one I could get in the UK though

Thank you very much doresy! :good: :good:
kiriyama suggested the Marlieri and I`m only looking at having 1 of them (decided after made the list above) at the start but will see how I go with it, I really do appreciate your offer, Thankyou :thanks:

The Regani are currently on Tri-Mars` stocklist, £5.99 each :hey: :hey:
I`m going to see what I can source at MA once my current fish have gone and the tank is ready, then I`ll start looking further afield, I`d be a very happy bunny if I can get all the fish that I`ve put on my list above without having to move mountains to get them :D :D

Ooooo I can`t wait!! :kana: :kana: :- :- :hooray: :hooray: :hooray: :yahoo: :yahoo:

not sure if you read this aswell

Neolamprologus leleupi X2 - meant to be quite a handfull
Neolamprologus caudopunctatus X2 -might attempt to use shells of your shellies but should be ok
Neolamprologus brichardi X2- id have one or leave them. if they breed its bye bye to everything else
Julidochromis regain(Yellow) X3- prob avoid. can be nasty. avoid Julidochromis marlieri aswell. smaller ones will have smaller terrotorys.

Neolamprologus multifasciatus X4-you just want one type of shelly really
'Lamprologus' brevis (M'toto) X6- as above
Cyps X4??- as said previous, you want a dozen atleast. should be in groups really.

are you wanting to breed any?, as you want to buy groups and wait till pairs form etc. Also the fact as these are all cichlids you dont want lots of diff species if your gonna have groups of them because of their terratorys. It wont be like putting a community trop tank together where everyones gets along, plus the tank will be better to watch if you have more numbers but less species. hope that helps :)

Thanks bullit, I need my specs perhaps :look:

All noted, I think I`ll probably opt for the brevis as they`re apparently more able to hold their own, I would up the numbers on just those but I think the multis are prettier :/ With the cyps I thought it was maybe better to start with lower numbers but if it`s better to have a larger number then it`s something I`ll seriously consider ;)
Will only have 1 of the Brichardi, won`t have the regain but possibly a Meleiri instead and only 1 of to start (not 100% yet though)

Not planning on breeding but if it happens then it happens :look:

See, this is the difficulty I have......as I have no experience of the Tangs I`m hoping opinons will help me out so that I can end up with a nice 'community' (for want of a better word) that is as least aggressive as possible :S

I`m determined it`s definitely the Tangs so I`m sure I`ll get there in the end B-)

You are most welcome to a Marlieri or two. The ones I move on are always an 1" or more....perhaps have a couple and try to get a small male elsewhere to increase the bloodline......mine are free btw. :D

I'm just pleased as it looks like we are bringing more Tanganyikan keepers to the South as there aren't too many of us.......mind you don't tell too many people as we wish to remain 'The Elite' :hey:

I'm excited for you! (BTW, have you seen the views/replies this thread has got.... :D )

I have indeed  B-)

I`ve noticed in some pics of Tang setups that quite often there`s a Frontosa in a tank too, kesgrave tropicals on ebay has one (thanks Goat btw) and I wondered how compatible they are?
I`m sorry if someone has already said but there`s been a lot of posts made and ideas thrown around so I`m somewhat confused :S

Try up here mate, ask for Tanganyikan in LFS round here and they give you a look like you're asking for an obscure orange

I did notice that there`s not a great deal of Tang choice compared to all the other fish in MA

they get big, (12"), there meant to be in groups. Will eat smaller fish when bigger.

Okey doke, that`ll be a No then :look:

Know what you mean!

I did nearly keel over in Edinburgh one day,
Tropheus, a Julidochromis Marlieri and some Multifasciatus in the same tank, thought I had been kidnapped y aliens and dumped somewhere else  The owner was very keen though so it was cool, I think that's the good thing with the various forums, getting to ask folk that keep these obscure cichlids and can point you in the right direction, :good:
Just found out that when I get the bigger tank I can keep the 20 gall running (3 tanks - all Tanganyikan - SWEET )
This is a cool thread

Well I have 3 Fronts and they are very happy. Had them since tiddlers. They did once eat 3, tank bred, 1" Cyprichromis Leptosomas that I managed to find.....wont make that mistake again. They don't eat my Juli fry at all though.....wierd! I think if they are kept well fed they leave tank mates alone most of the time.

As far as choice in LFS, yes Tanganyikans are limited but this make the hunt that much more exciting. However, if you find out on which day the LFS goes to buy stock and ask for something particular then they will do their best (well my local Maidenhead Aquatics do)

Back to my Frontosas, 2 are currently at approx 4-5" (can't do half) and the third is only a couple of inches. As long as you realise that you have to rehome at some point then it's ok to have them (imo)

I'll bare that in mind next time I pass by Edinburgh on my way back to the homelands (Dunbar) ;)
