One of my 4 harlequin rasboras keeeps rubbing itself against my plants and has 2 little white spots on it's tail. is this ich? I have no medicaion at the moment I could get some tomorrow, what should I do?

If it is ich if you are in the UK i would suggest using protozin and raising the temp to 30 degrees if you fish can stand that temp.

Yes I am in the UK i will raise the temp to 28 C this is the highest temp I believe suitable for my fish, I'm not definitely sure this is ich, one fish has 2 small white spots on its fin but has definitely been rubbing against the plants

It sounds like ich to me because i recently had to use protozin in my tank because my guppy had ich.

I'll pop into the lfs on the way home from work tomorrow and pick up some protozin, I have raised temp to 28 C is there anything else I can do?

You could always go higher than 28C ...( 82.4F ) //// most fish will tolerate high temps for a short time-- I crancked mine up to 88F ( 31C ) and am trying to do it with ONLY heat and no meds

Just tested my water:
ammonia = 0
nitrate = 0.1mg/L but the colour was paler than the coour chart so I would say <0.1
nitrate = 5mg/L
ph = 7-7.5
I think I have moderately hard water

2 weeks ago I swapped tanks and put the old filter material into the new filter, do you think because of the nitrite presence I have had a mini cycle?
Could this of then stressed the fish causing illness?
THere are only 2 small white spots on 1 fish how bad is this? and how bad is ich in general?

I have just dozed protozin and temp is at 29 C I will raise to 30 C tomorow when I can keep an eye on the fish, hope this works. Thanks for the replies very helpfull :rolleyes:

On day 3 of treating protozin, the white spots seem to have got smaller on the one fish and are now quite hard to see. I haven't seen any spots on any other fish, was starting to wonder if this definitely is whitespot? I thought it's suppose to get worse before it gets any better?

look like you might have just caught it in time
but dont build your hopes up yet keep a close eye
at all time till the end of the treatment i am glad
it is working for you :good:

thanks, yeh will hopefully keep improving. I haven't done any water changes since starting it's the 3rd day now should I do one whilst treating? also should I treat longer than the six days it says to on the bottle?

ok its day 4, the 2 white spots are still there. shouldn't they be gone by now? I thought the life cycle of the parasite would mean that it should of left the fish by now?
THere are no new spots and I haven't seen the infected fish flicking today

can anyone help? The 2 spots are still there I'm realkly not sure now if this is ich?

On the advice of "wilder" from this forum, I have today added my second dose of API's Pimafix to my adult Pearl Danios in the quarantine tank for visual spots...

Like you, I have only ever spotted two spots on any single fish (only two of the group show obvious spots, but all adults in just in case). Earlier today, I added the final "day 6" dose of Protozin, as I was initially worried about the spots being Ich. According to "Wilder" there is no problem mixing Protozin and Pimafix, who has been a member here for ~6 years, so I trust their call and have overlapped medication.

I had raised the QT temperature to 31C in case it was the start of an Ich epidemic, but it has been lowered to the room temperature of 25C now.

In just 24 hours, one of the fish with a spot near its mouth is visually looking much better, the spot looks much less vivid and has decreased in size.

benjoey, I'm simply writing about events with my first ever tropical fish, I'm not recommending a course of action for your situation.

Perhaps try and get a photo or a movie clip to show the forum members your rasboras, good luck!

thanks for the reply, have all the spots on your fish gone now?
I have done the final 6th day treatment, but the white spots are still there, can anyone tell me how long it should take before they will go? I know they are supposed to drop off and then they multiply in the tank as part of the life cycle, I can't find anywhere which has the time span for different parts of the lifecycle so anyones experience would be very helpfull
