Hi,

I think i may need a new heater for my fish tank. I currently have a second hand juwel 240 rio with standard filter and heater. The heater looks very corroded and it doesnt details on it which way to turn for hot or cold. Anyway have it turned all the way to the left and it seems to be idling at 28 degrees Celsius. It wont go any lower than that but will go higher.

Do i need to buy another juwel heater? Or can i buy any heater? What can anyone recommend, its a 240 litre tank.

Danny

Gosh,

You have the same problem as me... When I first got this heater it would literally make the water close to boil lol !

But now I have got it to sit at 23oC...

I would think that we both need to get new heaters! to ensure our fish are save in case the old heater fails when we aint there to save our fish!

I'm not much help but seeing as I am in the same situation I would like to know what the experts have to say also! :)

Any of the submersible heaters should do fine. Just get one that is about 1 watt per litre of water or a little more and set it where you want the temperature.

got mine used with the tank, i cant tell which way is hot/cold or the current temp, the thing looks like a wreck but i can see the light turning off and on when it activates and i notice when i'm using it that the water always feels warm. i just play with it until the other temp gauge looks right.

you probably shouldnt be basing the temp off the heater reading anyways, a proper temp gauge i think is the way to go. then again i'm using one that just sticks to the front of the tank, so i dunno if i should be saying that

maybe i should replace mine too, and my temp meter while i'm at it. but i'm lucky to be in southern california, if my heater stops working i'll probably still be ok, unless of course it breaks the other way and boils the fish =/

i am using a filter in my breeding tank which is probs over 10 yrs old! it has a knob to (eventually!) get the right temp with no details, a light to say it is on! and thats it! another one has a spring inside which goes bright orange when heating

! but as long as it works and dosent harm the terrapins (in this tank) im happy to keep it going. :D

one of my new heaters is rubbish...it works but is set on bout 28-30 degrees centigrade but makes the water bout 24!
