Just acquired a new tank and I'm looking for an external filter (the tank is approximately 200litres). Rather than having a separate heater I had a google to see if you can get filter/heaters combined similar to the Juwel internal setup. I've found the eheim 2324 (http://www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/fish/filters_pumps/canister_filters/eheim/40946) and was just wondering if anyone has had any experiences of combined units?

Cheers

I have never been a fan of heaters inside filters. They take up space that could be used for media. If you are using a canister style filter I would suggest looking into the Hydor Inline heaters which you place inline in the outflow hose.

I'd recommend the Hydro inline's too, I don't like the Eheim Thermo filter's, the element becomes covered in lime scale after a few weeks reducing its effeciency.

I would agree, I have used the Eheim Range in the past and the heater isnt a stable and constant source as you often get fluctuations depending on the filters media condition. The inline heaters from hydor as shown above are what i have been using for a while and now use on all but 2 of my tanks along side either a Fluval G6 or a G3 and in 2 cases Fluval FX5, For your size tank the Fluval G3 is for tanks up to 300 litres but it has adjustable flow, temp regulation and the best interior media design i have seen on external filters. It is all controlled using a small blue lcd on the front of the unit and the unit itself looks fab, Wouldnt look out of place in anypart of the house and would be wasted locked away in a cupboard. The filter even reminds you when you need to clean or change the media in the 3 seperate sections, mechanical , biological , chemical media. Self Priming feature, dual output duckbills nozels will rotate 180 degrees for optimal flow control and the filter alerts you if the temp get to low or even the flow.

Started using them last year and since havent looked back, Have replaced all of my systems with them except 2 which still run on fluval but the FX5, Ralph Hagen spent a lot of money designing these and it really shows.

Thanks for the excellent replies. Will have a proper look at the inline & g3 when I get home this morning on my laptop.

I was looking at the Hydors the other day when I visited the LFS and wondered if they were any good and now this post has answered that :good:
Going to get one soon as I hate to see heaters and such in my tanks.

I have just bought a hydor from my LFS, i was fed up of looking at the heater in the tank. They get to work pretty quick and seem to do the job well. They are bulky though. They get a thumbs up from me.

Just ordered a fluval 305 and the hydor inline of the interweb. Now the question is, do I replace the Juwel system in my vision or use them on my new tank that I'm setting up!

Looks like I'll have to make another purchase soon!

#41#### this hobby is addictive!

A hijack if i may, The 200w is rated for a 100L and the 300w for 200L are they not as Efficient as a normal one then. When i asked the LFS they said the extenal healers tend to use more lecci and dnt recomend them, thoughts?

The 305 arrived today! Didn't realise how big it is!

Installed and working in tandem with the juwel internal setup. Just waiting for the hydor heater. How long should I run the two filters in tandem before switching off the juwel?

With regards to the juice used by internal/external heaters, i've no idea about the juice used (i'd think it'd be minimal though) but the 300w hydor is for 200-300 litre aquariums.

The 200w Hydor is fine on a 200 litre tank, they work out the same as the normal aquarium heaters.

Take the Juwel sponge out of your internal filter and put them in your new external. Remove internal Juwel filter. Job done! :good: just make sure you leave them in the new filter for at least a couple of months.

So there are no problems with the ribbed tubes and connecting up the heater to them then? I thought that was what made the 305's a nightmare to get anything "inline" working with them. (I have two 305's in the garage, they are quite small i thought!)
