how regular does people here de-worm their discus?
or do they?

You shouldn't need to, unless they develop problems, I would never treat my fish without due cause. Though some people do it as a precaution when buying new fish.

If you are feeding your discus with frozen life foods like blood worms, it's advisable to deworm once every 3 months, in two doses of a week apart.
If you don't overdose in your medication, then there should not be any harm to your discus.

Why? Surely if it's frozen food it won't cause any problems?

Sorry Kev, just re-read my post, didnt mean to put frozen foods. makes no sense. If you are feeding live foods (which I dont) then it would be advisable to worm your fish.

The only time I worm mine is if I am adding fish to the tank. I usually use flubenol 15 - available pretty much anywhere these days, used to be a right pain to get hold of! It treats for flukes as well as worms.

Exciting stuff to discover!

Hopefully your mind has changed since your last post there.

Dude, you took what I said completly the wrong way. Emotions and feeling don't exactly get through text properly, nor does meaning or immediate explination. I never said anything about not properly homing the fish. I'm trying to do the very best I can.

here's what i've found with my research.

Discus like ph of 5.5 through 6.8
My peacock eel's like ph of 6 - 8
My senegal can tolerate wide ranges, but perfers 6-8
Kinfe fish perfer 6.7, but anywhere from 6-7 will do. Discus are even a suggusted companion for knife fish by some sites such as This

If I took that kind of attitude towards it, I'd have done nothing at all in even asking.
But I do care. Quite a bit. And i'm trying to work this out to where I can have it in a proper home once my 38 is cycled. And small discus here, you can't get rid of. But once it's big, it can sell quite easily.

I've gotten the proper food for it. I'm preparing the proper water for it. And I'm making sure the companions are good for it.

Your missing the point Gankutsuou, the only way you should keep your discus is in a group or as a bonded pair. You already have the fish, so getting a pair isn't going to happen, you don't have room for a group so that isn't going to happen either!

You also need to think about the higher temps requried for discus, I'm not sure about your tank mates but some fish won't put up with them for a prolonged period of time.

Please just take the fish back to your LFS, even if you have to give it to them. If you have to loose money it will be a good lesson learned I think.

As far as I see, for now, he's doing great.

My LFS has stated "No trades for a few months, we're dealing with some stocking issues"

Their current discus are 1 large breeding pair and 2 large loners, each 2x in diamiter of my little dude. It'd be bad to put him in that tank....

As for Fish city, they have 1000s of the same dudes, and i'd feel bad after putting him on a brine/blood worm diet.

He's doing great, btw.
He's eating bloodworms even directly after water changes. Gobbling down even more than my senegal.
Which means he's going to plump up quick
But his colours are becoming fantastic, and he's fine for now. when he gets larger he'll be very easy to sell, as ALL my lfs LOVE large discus (cept 1, but hey, that leaves 3 others)

- No, you're trying to do the best you can for you.

- What does a knife fish have to do with anything in this topic?

If I took that kind of attitude towards it, I'd have done nothing at all in even asking.

- Kev_kb answered to this for me perfectly.

- This, too.

- Right... As far as you can see...

- Go to another store.

As for Fish city, they have 1000s of the same dudes, and i'd feel bad after putting him on a brine/blood worm diet.
- Did you really just say that? Hang on... let me rephrase: Did you say that you would rather keep him alone in a tank too small for him (YES even at his juvy size) because you don't want him to get sad because he won't be getting the same diet??

He's eating bloodworms even directly after water changes. Gobbling down even more than my senegal.

- Any of my fish eat readily at any time (even if I had previously chased them around with a toy shark). Oh and of course he gets the blood worms before the bichir ... senegals have to 'sniff' out their food as they are nearly blind - but I'm sure you already knew this, because you know everything.

But his colours are becoming fantastic, and he's fine for now. when he gets larger he'll be very easy to sell, as ALL my lfs LOVE large discus (cept 1, but hey, that leaves 3 others)
- I'll rephrase this one, too. Did you say that you aren't going to give him back because you want more money??

- I know, Iamca; that's about all you can say...

~ Wonderboy!

P.S. - everyone at TFF, I don't really chase my fish around with toy sharks.

Yet another case of asking for advice and then refusing to accept it. What's the point in asking for advice if all you want to hear is what you want to hear? Take the poor thing back - to be honest I don't believe half the excuses you're giving, you're just trying to take the heat off on here by posting porky pies. :hey:

All righty. I hope this will please you all, as I aim to make it my final setup.

1x Senegal Bichir (albino)
2x Peacock eel
1x African Butterfly fish
1x Syno. Catfish (featherfin)
1x African Brown knife
1x False flying fox

Now let's take note.....

the discus is not included in that :hyper:

Well, the one problem is that the third LFS i've tried won't take it for a bit also.
Here's the conversation.

me- "I was wondering if I might be able to trade in a disc. Dicsus. About the size of the ones you had in three weeks ago."

him - "Is it pretty"

me - "Fairly"

Him - "then that means it isn't"

me- "It's still adjusting and growing. It'll get much better"

Him - "I'd rather not deal with that right now."

So again, another LFS that says it needs to grow for a bit :/

But I am trying. Next week I'm going to hit the shop that deals the best with fish, and does mostly cichlids. But just letting you all know, he's not in the final tank plan :hyper:

- Is this for your 38? (I hope so)
- I would stay away from the brown knife - granted they're really cool and unique, but the ones that I've delt with were so tempormental and aggressive.....
- And no discus, good, thankyou.
