The Saddest Fish You Ever Saw...

Wow. That's all so sad! I don't actually think we have that many bad lps/lfs here. When they have a sale day, their tanks are a bit full, and you only ever see an odd dead fish. I'd hate to have to walk into a store and see what you guys have seen.

Well I spoke to the store manager, he said he couldn't separate them etc etc. Best thing is to speak to RSPCA (if you're uk based of course), and they can do an on the spot inspection.

Saddest fish I've ever seen are two from the same lfs. One was a little tetra with no fins. It's tank mates had nipped him half to death. He was just lying there, gasping, and when I asked the shop assistant if he could be moved to QT/isolation/hospital tank or I would buy him, she just told me "he won't survive the journey" and walked off.

The second fish is actually my little Ffinsan, a cambodian male betta. I bought him from the same shop and he has no fins. Put in with cichlids who ripped him up something awful. Was in with them for days and the shop didn't know or care. The guy even had the nerve to tell me he was "fine" when I bought him. He's not fine! He's got no fins, possible fin-rot and he couldn't swim properly!

He's so happy now though ^^ clean water, loads of space to himself, fresh bloodworms and a lady just across the divide. He couldn't be happier!

Rather then just grumbling about the stores report them and move on to better ones. Fortunately the stores in my area are ok, bettas go in the display tanks although normally with tetras so their fins are a little ragged from nipping but atleast its filtered and tropical temps.

Two yellow Labs I saw my freshman year at high school. They were in a 20g tank, no rock work or anything. Only have the water in the tank, they had not been fed in almost 3 months, and they had not had a water change in just as long.

:( Was this at a store or did somebody own them?

If I had saw them, I would have brought them some sort of food... wouldn't care if I got in trouble for it...

It was my teacher's fish. Here is a thread I made about it 2 years ago. There are pic's in it. I saved the fish though!

I have vented, suggested, asked etc on a couple of occasions visiting one particualr store but nothing changes, so believe a spot inspection should work. Watch this space ;) (p,s, a certain email has been sent, should have done it long ago but now have some photos)

same with pets at home !! the fish were in shocking conditions. there were bettas in tanks where they coulnd even move let alone show of there fins. the was 3 albino corries in with about 1000 guppies (not an egseration) and the poor cories had no fins what so ever!! also there were many platies in a very small tank, and there was about 10 - 15 dead ones and 2 half decayed fish!!!

the cold water fish was also soooo overstocked i was looking at the goldfish, there was one dead gold fish and about 20 other goldfish where eating it!! it was horrible

the thing that pissed me off the most was that 1 woman came in and bought a 30l tank and then they sold her 6 bags of fish each with 5 fish in them !!! it was soo obvious that she wasa gunna put cold water in the tank and put the fish straight in - a recipie for DISASTER!!!

:\ Another place did the same thing for me when I didn't know the nitrogen cycle. A reliable looking LFS (where, after this time, the advice I have gotten could go either way depending on the staff member) sold me... 6 fish, all but 1 that would outgrow my tank, and one being brackish, when I TOLD HIM I had just set up the tank the day before. He said just pour the water from the bag in and everything will be good...

1 dead fish in a tank of about 20 isnt bad! its inevitable, a shop will get a dead fish from time to time

just remember, their tanks maybe over stocked...but theyre running massive filters on each system which get massive water changes daily.

Yeah, stores are going to have overstocked tanks because they usually have 1 Super-filter for the whole Tropical section, and whole Marine and Coldwater section. Besides, the fish are housed there for a short period of time. I usually only feel angry towards this if the fish has trouble moving, like a full grown Blood Parrot in a 5 gal.
