The problem with owning cichlids is all my other fish seem a bit, well, dull now!

Even my beloved Angels fail to excite me like they did a few weeks ago.

Watching my 5 cichlids chase after guppy fry and each other is simply brilliant.

And watching them swim towards the front of the tank to scrutinise me whilst Iam watching them is fantastic.

same here i need to pay off my big tank i ordered ages ago 8 x 3 x 3 plus sump and all the crap to go with it but now im out of work lol

8 x 3 x 3!

Off the top of my head isn't that about 2000 litres? That's 2 tons of water.

Where in your house is it?

What are your floors made of?

cheers mate

I just thought you could probably keep emperor cichlids in a tank that big!

Well just to be clear, the problem with owning cichlids is no-one wants the babies. Thats easy enough, keep same sex tanks. So now I have eggs in my male tank!!!!! Does anyone know if they can sometimes change sex in a single sex situation like some frogs can?

No they can't change sex, however, females can sometimes take on male coloration, likewise subdominate males can take on the females coloring. And, the accuracy of venting depends on the person doing it, sometimes you can make a mistake, especially if you vent while they are still small. :good:

Well one male bred with a female I had. The other male bred with another female I had. Both females were removed and one rehomed. The rehomed female bred with another male in her new home and the two males were put together. Now I have eggs...

Well, someone is masquerading as a boy. I've heard of females going through the mating ritual when no males are present. A dominate female will take on the male role, obviously the eggs won't be fertilized and the holding female will spit or swallow them after a few days.
