The Green Machine

Ok I take it your setting up a new uncycled tank? If your tank is mature and your using plants that don't need a nutrient rich substrate then use what ever is more pleasing to your eye.

"SAND IS NOT A SUITABLE SUBSTRATE FOR PLANTING"

SAND IN ITSELF IS NOT A PERFECT SUBSTRATE,IT WILL COMPACT MAKING IT DIFFICULT FOR PLANTS TO ROOT,
those two are not the same.

I would agree that sand is not perfect, although I wouldn't say plants have issues rooting because it compacts, but as Steve said the plants can't stay in it long enough to root!

There are some plants with finer more delicate roots that would probably prefer sand to coarser gravel. They're probably just trying to get you to buy one of the more expensive plant substrates instead of the sand.

OK thanks,
But what about their claim that their substrate cycles the tank?
isn't this totally misleading?.

nope it isn't. The aquasoils help cycle tank, they leech a fair amount of ammonia, which helps cycle the filter. Planted people don't tend to cycle in the traditional way. We use the silent cycle.
