This year has seen a large increase in danio species available with the welcome return of D.Nigrofasciatus.

I am a little suspicous though.

D Kyathit seems very similar to Rerio.

D Roseus has been around for about 10 years (I first saw it as Red or Burma Danio in 1994) and is very similar to the Pearl Danio

Danio Sp Goldring is suspicously similar to D Nigrofasciatus.

Can anyone explain the sudden emergence of these species. It seems very simliar to the appearance of D Frankei in the 1960's

As we know D Frankei turned out to be a race of D Rerio.

I am very suspicious that the above fish may be separate races rather than species. Colour aside the body shape and structure seems identical. Has anyone Hybridised Pearl/Rosues Rerio/Kyathit Nigrofasciatus/Goldring and if so were the offspring fertile - that is the key to the question.

PS anyone know the scientific name of Hikari? I suspect it is a "Devario" species rather than Danio as its deeper body resembles the Devario species. Are its eggs sticky or not as AFAIK the Devario species have sticky eggs?

D.Nigrofasciatus, D. Kyathit, D. Roseus & Danio (Sp.) Goldring
are all very popular in Germany. The Germans seem to be the world leaders is danionin research.

With the exception of the goldfring I have all the other danios listed they are all indeed seperate species.
If you can find them I'd say get them, you won't regret it.

FYI there are three colour morphs of the kyathit, see my website for more.

Just got it now,
no problem crediting you with the picture, however I cannot up date the site imediaty, i am looking to do the next update around mid november.

The hikari "therory" that you mention in the email, has been confirmed to me by one of britains leading breeders.
I'll PM you his name and details if you wish.

Hi wolf,

Yes I would be most grateful for his details. The staff at Wholesale Tropicals told me about the colours denoting the sexes on Monday they were apparently told by a senior FBAS member so it may be the same chap. I'm still a little sceptical though. does he know what their scientific name is.

I thought I had bought a true 'Pair' of both blue and yellow, oh well. I only have one left now and they showed no interest in breeding.

By the way, do you want the Goldring Photo, do you know anywhere selling them at the moment?

Regards

Paul

I'd love a picture of the goldring

the only place I know of is tropical fish direct
they have
Fire Ring £2.97each, Blue Ring £2.46each
I have had very little help from them, as they seem to be a
business run part time, but worth a try.

I'm on the understanding the Hikari is the scientific name but I have found one referance to D. Sp Burma aka hikari.

Hi Wolf

I Imagine that the fish they describe as "Blue Ring" (3.5cm) is goldring.

Any idea what "Fire Ring" 5cm is, spotted Kyathit perhaps?

THey are only about 1/2 hour down the M1 from me so I could easily collect

I have been informed that the fire ring is very similar to kerri only has a redish hue rather than blue.
I'd love to see some pics of them if you decide to buy some.
I'll get some when I get my 8th tank :)
