I'm planning on doing a pictorial once I get around to drilling a couple of 20 gallons. You really have to look at it as grinding a hole in glass, even though it is called drilling. In my setup it amounts to saving 50% time wise, and not having to watch, just set a timer, shut off the water when done. While not for everyone, if you have many tanks, or back problems it is a solution.

Agree with Tizer.
You are not going to be able to clean the substrate this way.
And with your Discus, I am assuming you are feeding them heavily? So you will need to get the extra poop and any uneaten food out or you will have a problem with high nitrates.

buy an FX5 these have a drain facility that involves connecting a hose to the purgal (spelling) valve.

A Pythonesque sort of system was back in Fishroom v1.2, I'm on v4.4 atm. If it worked better with my setup it would still be in use.

You could set up a permanent syphon. Have some tubing locked in place so some of it hangs into the tank to the desired emptying level, and have the other side hanging over and down to just below the tanks base.

All you need is a valve on the end of the tubing and bobs your mothers brother - Simply attach your long hose to the valve and open for a water change. You could use the same setup for refilling too if the tap pressure it up to it.

Just make sure you have a guard on end of the pipe to stop Mr fishy from swimming in. This setup would again require a decent valve.... or you could always have a clamp in-line with (before)the valve to prevent too much pressure on the valve itself.

Seen fishrooms set up that way; self siphoning overflow. There is always a floor drain nearby as well. They tend to leak, lose the siphon, and have a much lower flow rate for a given diameter of pipe than a drilled overflow.
