The Decision Has Been Taken

I have had enough of the dodgy black and white gravel in my big tank, so Saturday's job will be to strip it down, remove and chuck the b&w, and go with sand.

I have black sand in my small tank, like the look of it, and have about ¼ of a bag left, so another bag will just about do it. Or I have most of a 25kg bag of Argos playsand in the garage as well.

So, who would go with black sand and who would go with "yellow" sand? And any other hints and tips?

Id personally go for the 'yellow' sand, I prefer the natural look

choice of sand colour would depend on the rest of the scape for me.

Dimly lit hardscape of rocks & wood = white sand
Brightly lit heavily planted = black sand

I have got yellow sand in my tank and it think it looks good.....i personally would never go with black sand

I'd go with black sand if I already had some hanging about. I have yellow/brown/whatever sand but that's because I'm cheap

See, that's my dilemma - I would need to buy some more black sand, but have sufficient yellow.

Why not go with the yellow to start, since you already have one with black sand, and if you really hate it you can always change it i suppose? Depends how bothered you are about seeing the poop I guess

I've always used Argos play sand because it's cheap and my tanks are large, but I do like the look of black sand especially if your going for a planted tank.

Never ask a goth to choose between plain or black ... it's black all the way



Seriously though, I like the look of black gravel in my tank and given the chance, the cash, and the inclination I'd change to black sand too

I have 25kg of Argos playsand in the 4ft which i thought was really nice until i decided to do the smaller 2ft planted shrimp and cory tank with black. Now i wish i hadnt been so cheap, and done the whole 4ft in black

It does look cool. I bought a bag of "dark" sand (mixture of black and dark brown) from P@H, and mixed it with 2kg of pure black from MA (@ £8 a bag )

IMO, looks much better against the dark green mosses and plants, and the Cherry Shrimp appear a lot darker red than they did when i had some in the 4ft a while ago.

Which tank is this for? The 65l?

Yes it is. I think I'm gonna see if any of my LFS would be willing to swap 20 or so Assassins for a bag of black sand.

My Fighter and CHillis look so good against the black sand in the 34l.
