The debate of the century

That's deffinately weird but you may want to ask your friend why he does it before you dismiss it... When you euthanise a fish by knocking it out or using clove oil or if a fish has died of unknown causes, it is actualy often considered more humane to first destroy the fish's brain and then get rid of it. The reason for this is that there is the chance of it re-gaining consciousness and I'm sure you can see how inhumane that would be once it had been disposed of. Obviously, the method of destroying the brain could vary - crushing it by smashing the head or using a pin is the most common. It may be that your friend heard of this somewhere and thought that maybe cutting the fish up would solve the problem. Or he has some fascination with fish anatomy or is trying to pin point the cause of death. Or maybe he's just sick.

If they're quite dead, then there's nothing inhumane about it. It seems a bit peculiar, granted, but as someone already said, maybe he's dismembering them to make sure that they don't "wake back up" later, seeing as it can be had to tell with cold blooded animals sometimes? Also, I was unclear: is he consuming them as well? I know a few people who have eaten deceased pets rather than "waste" the body, so maybe thats what he's up to.
There is a crazy cat hoarder down the street, and when her cats die, she chops them up and feeds them to her other cats. Someone called on it, but its technically not illegal since the cats were dead. I suppose if it keeps her cats from starving, then its ok, but she shouldn't have all those cats to begin with. Animal control in our area is pretty much useless.

Completely off topic but RandomWiktor the image in your signature "Lives, Not Decorations" seems to sum it all up for 'ornamental fish'. It realy does.

Personally if I wake up and find a dead fish in my tank I will usually decaptate it, "just in case" since I dont' want it to suffer, before disposing of them body.

My thoughts exactly. A guy at the St. Catherines Aquarium Society once told everyone he had eaten one of his dead fish!

I stopped going to those meettings.
Hmm, I thought I was the only one who'd heard weird stories about the St. Kitt's AS.. I'm friends with one of the guys at Petland who mentioned them to me, but said that I probably wouldn't like many of their meetings. ..He said they did some weird stuff, and actually mentioned a story similar to that. Good to know he's not crazy!

As for the subject -- it's just plain weird and a waste of time unless he's performing some sort of weird fishy autopsy.

OK this has to stop! I've never laughed, then gagged, laughed, then gagged again while reading the same thread! I'm not sure if I should just go to bed, or make a sandwich first.

ok puke! have you ever cut open a dead ornamental fish (or left one in the garbage for too long)??    no, im sorry. i couldnt eat one if you paid me!

astroboy... your link made me heave... but it was kinda interesting to see how wierd some people are... :alien:

Why? Its a commonly eaten fish in South America. Although its a little different because it was raised in home aquaria. I bet it tasted great!

I see no problem with it. Then again, I'm a little on the unusual side when it comes to such matters. Really, unless you have bigger fish, there's not a whole lot you can see when you cut 'em up. I've cut open fish before, I've cut open baby goats, pigs, cows, and who knows what else (don't worry, they were all dead first, and no there weren't all from biology class). Like I said though, I'm unusual.

Wow, that's awesome lizard. I would feel wierd cutting up a fish that I've owned becuase you get to sortof know the fish after a while. But if I go fishing it's a different story. It's like having a pet chicken. Would you eat your pet chicken?

if hes cutting them open to eat them or examine them its fine, if hes cutting them open and sticking them down his pants hes got a problem

When I was 9 my best friend and I went to her house and this big goldfish that they kept had just died and we decided to play scientist with it. We put on shower caps and swimming goggles and gloves and did an autopsy  We even took notes on it. Unfortunately all we could report was unknown cause of death

I have to admit it was traumatic because her older brother and his heart throb friends walked in as two girls in interesting outfits are cutting up the fish on the kitchen table  That was definately a blow to our preteen egos
