Texas Blue And Jack Dempsy

I have a Texas Blue and a Jack Dempsy and would like to know how to tell weather they are Male or Female?

males will have a package, females wont.

Ignore that.

A male Texas will grow at around 6" a nuchal hump, its easy to spot, plus his fins will grow rounder and longer than a females.

Cant help on a JD sex though as Ive never had one.

Are these fish both in the same tank, if so, what size is it, how long have you had them and are you prepared to remove the Texas, as once it hits maturity at around 5/6" it could cause chaos and kill everything in the tank.

the markings on a jack dempseys face are more lined and a females are blotchy also the typical values apply here that a male has extended anal and dorsal fins and sometimes have a darker body than females also the speckles are more iredescent on a male u can usually tell the sex easily when this fish hits about 3-4 inches

Male JD's will usually have a thicker and more defined red line on the top of the dorsal fin.

And the bump on the head is not always a surefire way to tell a male from a female.

very true about them both having it, but its much thicker and deeper red in the male.

its actually a mistake that as i had a male and female and believe it or not the red line was more deeper and thicker than the males

well, there are always exceptions I guess. Thats just how I have always sexed them. Kinda like the cranial bump, which can be found on females, but is much more common on males.

true one thing is for sure i still cant tell if my blue dempsey is male or female but its only like 2.5" atm
